Just ordered a pair from ideal. Does anyone have stock from them? If so how is it and I am wanting to try to get a breeding program started!
New to the sumatra breed, my grandfather had one wen I was little. I've spent most of my adult life looking for that black chicken! I've found it! And I want to improve it to make it what it was in its origins!

I got my first Sumatras finally. I decided to order some bantam eggs on ebay and only 3 of 10 hatched unfortunately but today I got a 1 month old STD size. I have no idea if it is a hen or roo. If you guys could help. He will lose all the white right? Thanks

yes the white will go away and she will be all black. While I'm not certain, I'm sticking with pullet for sex

It's always taken me awhile to confirm gender with my Sumatras, I usually just wait until shiny saddle feathers start growing in on the cockerels to be certain. Right now out of my Dun pen I'm pretty sure I have 2 Dun cockerels, both are a very dark Dun. Then I have 1 confirmed Dun pullet, she was the first chick to hatch and the oldest of the group, she's a lighter Dun colored bird, very pretty. I have 2 younger Duns that I believe are also pullets due to the fact that they have feathered in lighter in color like the oldest pullet and aren't showing any signs of male feathers at all.

I've also got 3 Platinum chicks, I really have no idea what gender they are. I think the oldest one is a cockerel but I haven't looked closely at his/it's saddle area yet.

Either way I'm excited to see how they mature and I'm glad I'll have a few choices between who will be the future sire of my Dun flock.

Darn, i actually kinda wanted a roo but I guess can keep looking. I just think full grown sumatra roos are one of the most beautiful chickens there are
they are and your might be. The only way I can tell for sure is when the tail feathers start to come in. Sometimes attitude tells me. But can't get that from a picture. To me yours looks like a pullet for some reason. I could be wrong
