Summertime Meat Birds?

When they are that uncomfortable they will not put on much weight. If you have low humidity you could try misters and big pans of water with ice blocks. They might stay alive but still not gain much weight for all that extra work. Cornish game hen is kind of nice when you look at the alternative.

I'm liking the cornish game hen idea. They aren't that size yet, just a little bigger than quail now. We'll see how it goes and how many more I lose in the next day or 2.

That is not a good sign losing them so small. Do you have any shade you can rig them? Move a picnic or patio table out there for them to go under maybe? Big beach umbrella? They should be able to stand some heat that small. We used the little free-standing misters kids play in when we lived in CA desert. They would just sit under the misters in a circle.

Yes, I provided them with more shade this morning. Not going to put misters in, the logistics of that are just not worth it to me

That may work, but may also spray and harm the vegetables in the garden. The idea of getting the ground under those birds wet grosses me out though, ugh.... that smell....
I will think about it though!

It depends on how humid it is where you are. I do not see a location in your avatar. Where I used to live the mist evaporated before it got to the ground! It is pretty fine, not like a sprinkler, despite the pic of kids playing. It kept some 10 pounders alive to age of ~10-12 weeks. That and shade, in Riverside county CA where 100* is a cool spring day.

I'm in California, but way to the north of Riverside. It's pretty dry here. Will look into the mister, it may come in handy for other things too. Thanks!

They aren't game hen size yet, I got them less than 2 weeks ago. I put some cardboard up on top and against the sunny sides of their fence to provide more shade today, hope it helps. Their shade structure is absolutely hideous looking, though!
There is no way I am going to let them out of their pen, they are in a temporary fence in my garden. I can move their entire run, but have limited spaces to put them. They have to stay in the fenced garden area because of the puppy and most of the space is taken by plants right now.

I'm looking at moving the entire garden fence out a bit so they have a bigger place to roam but it will not solve the shade problem at all. The whole yard gets full sun. There are city setback requirements that dictate I can't put them in shadier parts of the property...which is so stupid. Because of the size and shape of my property, the only place they can legally go is smack in the middle of my front yard, lol

To keep the animals alive, redneck it. Looks don't matter. How many in a what size tractor? Any chance of slapping another tractor together to spread them out? May consider a fan.

Ha Ha! Northern Cal front yard, just make it look like a beach party with misters and a sun umbrella!
