Sunburn on hens backs how do I treat it?

My hens first lost their back feathers from the roosters mating. After I separated the hens from the roosters, the hens started feather picking. I have several with bare backs. Now that winter is over I've let them out in their run but they do get exposure to sun and their backs are pink/red. Should I use suntan lotion on them or do nothing? Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi Katie, welcome to BYC.
As for your hens, get some Blue Kote. You can get it at most feed stores. Spray the "plucked" areas with this. It will help with the healing process, and stop further picking. This will also protect them from the sun.

do not use suntan lotion ...there is an ingredient in it which is harmful to birds (absorbed thru skin) ...particularly in this case where you have a damged skin.

Thanks so much for your advice. I am so glad that I found this site - there is a wealth of information here. I am new to raising chickens and it's been a fun learning adventure so far. I never knew chickens could be so fascinating and funny.
