That would be another good thing to plant. I'm trying to plan ahead and plant things that I can feed them thru out the winter months. I'm going to do pumpkins and freeze them and anything else my freezer has room for. I think I would go for the black oil sunflower. That is what I give them now.

I have 80 acres with all kinds of stuff growing on it. I picked persimmons and froze them along with some wild berries, cherries, apples, plums, now I'm cheating. I just thought planning ahead will help on the feed bill. Right now I spend shhhhh don't tell, $9.00 a month (not bad, huh???) on 50# layer feed. I have 21 pullets now. My chicks free range a lot and I feed them the fruits and left overs. They also just absolutely love our wood pile. Especially when it warms up a bit. Hubby said "what are the eating?" BUGS, bugs and more bugs!

Chickens can eat most any type of grain crops, and one of the cheapest places to buy seed is here:

DO NOT feed them the "seed" grains. They are often treated with different chemicals.

If they dont have what you want, they can order it for you.

Also many "feed" grains CAN be planted. I often buy whole oats (horse feed) to plant in pastures, and get good results.
"Feed" corn is about $9.00 for 50 lbs, while "seed" corn can be as high as $300 for 50 lbs.
