Sunrise in the Distance

Chapter 1
It was a misty February morning. The cardinals sung in the pines, the squirrels chattered in the oaks, and the geese flew over the mountain peaks. Lunar was asleep in her den when Storm, the alpha male of Blizzard Pack, approached her. He didn't greet her or anything, just sat down.
Lunar awoke and looked at him. He seemed to be changing somehow. He used to be always by her side, and now it seemed like they were drifting apart from each other.
He tuned toward her. " How are you?" he asked.
"I'm good. You?" she said getting up and walking over to him.
"Fine," he said and rested his head on his paws. "Some of the pack members reported they smelled a moose inside our territory. I was going to get the pack together to hunt it down."
"Let's go then!" she said and jumped up, eager to go on a hunt with her mate and the pack.
"Okay." He rose to his paws. "Let's go tell the others."
Lunar went outside the den and out to the pack. "We're going on a hunt!" she announced.

Echo hid in the bushes. It was her secret meeting place. The place where she met Eagle. He tail thumped with joy at the thought. Her beloved might come any moment now!

Storm looked a Lunar. "Would you like to lead the hunt? I have some uh...business to take care of."
"Okay..." Lunar looked at him suspiciously.
"Thanks I'll be back soon." He trotted of toward were he knew Echo would be waiting.
"You better be," she mumbled to herself. Lunar barked a command for all the Blizzard Pack Wolves to listen to what she had to say. "We're going on a hunt," she announced again. "Storm Eagle is busy, so I am going to lead it."
Raven listened quietly to her alpha, her pelt with anticipation for the hunt.
Lunar began to count the wolves, making sure everyone was there.
The beta walked over to her. Raven asked just to confirm, "So we will leave soon?"
"Yes, we can leave now." She said when she saw that they were all there and prepared to leave.
Raven nodded and waited for Lunar to command them to leave.

Drifter smiled as he watched Blizzard pack below. He wagged his tail and snarled evily. He issued a howl for them to hear.
Raven perked her ears and turned her head to the source of the howl. A light growl slipped between her fangs. She headed off to the source to chase the intruder away.
Lunar was about to go but then she heard Drifter. She bolted after the beta to chase him--or fight him away.
Storm went off toward Echo. He saw her exactly were she always hid and ran forward.
Echo smelled Storm and gave a happy whine. Her tail thumped on the ground happily.

Drifter saw the other wolves coming. He stood stiff legged and tail raised,ready to be inspected. If he would not be accepted,he would fight.
Raven now approached him, with her head high and teeth bared. She growled, "Why are you here and who are you?"
Lunar stopped in front of Drifter. "Who are you and what do you want here?"
Drifter's yellow eyes bored holes. "I've come to join." he said coldly.
Raven hissed,"What makes you think we want you to join?"
Drifter glared daggers,but didn't reply. To do so would be foolish.
The proud beta bared her teeth at him, but knew that the alpha would have to decide if he could join.
Drifter stared ahead, like a soldier at attention.
Lunar nodded at Raven and then bounded onto Drifter. She began to growl and twist the fur on his neck every which way with her teeth.
Drifter bit and clawed randomly. He wasn't familiar with other wolves and wasn't sure what they were doing.
Lunar sunk her teeth into his fur and yanked at it, hair flying everywhere.
Drifter yelped and bit at her throat.
Raven snarled and leaped at Drifter to protect her alpha.
Drifter recoiled and did something he had never done before. So desperate to join and eager for company,he rolled over,submitting to them. He gave a sorry wolf smile,knowing they would probably not attack now.
Raven stopped in her tracks. She was quite stunned by his action of submission but was now satisfied. She asked," Who are you? "
"I'm Drifter. Loner of the land of my father's." he spoke with a young tone,he wasn't very old,but he had refined speech.
Lunar looked at him. I wish my mate were here. Where on earth is he? She didn't know what to say to Drifter.
Raven questioned further, "Why are you on our pack's territory? "
"Yeah! What are you doing here?" Lunar finally said.
Drifter sighed. "Because I 'wasn't a worthy son' whatever that means."
Raven nodded slowly. It wasn't for her to decide if he could join. She looked over at Lunar.
"Go away for now. I still don't trust you." she said to Drifter.
Drifter looked away. "I don't like to talk about it. My dad had too high of standards. Impossible for a little pup to pass."
"What should I do about it? And...which pack were you born in?" Lunar asked.
Drifter replied harshly. "I thought maybe you should like to know WHY I left. And I don't know. They never made a name for it."
"If you don't even want to tell me what pack you were born in, why should I believe the rest of what you say?"
Raven nodded in agreement and looked back at Drifter.
"It was so evil I've chosen to forget the name." Drifter replied to Lunar's protest.
"Until my mate returns, I can't let you in the pack. Right, Raven?" she looked at her beta. Without waiting for reply, she said, Lunar looked at Drifter. "Go away. Now!" She was fixing to go searching for her mate.
Drifter arose and laid his ears back. "I thought you were different. But you're not. You're just like the other packs. Ruthless,uncaring monsters!" and with that he ran off.

Chapter 2

Lunar bolted and tried to find Storm. She ran until she saw Storm with another wolf. She snarled and ran after Echo.
Storm still focused entirely on Echo. He didn't see Lunar. " What..." Storms legs felt like they couldn't hold him anymore and he sat down shocked.
Echo ears back slightly in fear. "Who are you and did you hear anything said?!?!?!'
Storm still in shock was in more shock when he whirled around to find Lunar standing behind him. "Lunar...."
"Oh this is your..." Echo couldn't finish.
"Why......... I thought you were with the pack." Storm stumbled with words.
Echo gulped and whispered to Storm. "What did she hear!?!?!?!"
Lunar raced up to Echo and bit her neck.
Echo yelped and scratched at Lunar. "Storm! Help!
Storm would not allow Lunar to hurt Echo. He had never attacked her before but now he through himself in her way and grabbed her scruff in his teeth flinging her away.
After ignoring Storm and sinking her teeth into Echo's scruff and ringing it like a dishtowel she turned to her mate and bit his leg with all her might.
Storm yelped but grabbed her muzzle in his and sank his teeth in her nose.
Blood came
out of her muzzle as she threw herself back onto Echo, clenching her teeth into her throat and latching on cutting her air off.
Now frantic for Echo's life Storm did the only option he had. He lunged at Lunar's throat in an final effort to release her.
Lunar took no heed to the pain in her throat. She was outraged and was determined to make Echo never come around her mate again.
Storm tugged and pulled them. He screamed. "Lunar let her go! Please." He begged.
"Let me go! Let me go!" Echo croaked as she kicked out with her paws in hoping to hit her attacker.
Lunar showed grace and retreated her teeth from Echo's throat. She snarled at Storm.
Echo scrambled to her feet,growling as blood began to well from her wounds. "Who do you think you are?!?!" she snapped.
"I'm your cheater's mate, you vagabond!" she growled at Echo.
Echo didn't care if this wolf had just saved her life. "No one calls me that!"
"Shut up, before I kill you this time!" Lunar hissed.
Echo sneered at the other alpha. "You can't. And even if you did Storm still wouldn't like you!"
"I could care less, he deserted me!" she looked at Storm.
Echo narrowed her eyes. "You're jealous! That's what you are!" the wolf growled.
Lunar jumped onto Echo, sinking her teeth into her white fur again.
Echo yelped,then reached around trying to get a hold of Lunar's neck.
Lunar retreated and then stared at Storm. "You're the real one I should kill. You deserted me. You can't even stay long enough to lead the pack in a hunt. Guess what? A wolf just came to our camp that I like. A male wolf. So good bye, may your life be happy with this..this..this devil!" she turned to Echo. "Be ready to get deserted. he won't love you. he just wants to spread his genes, that's all."
Echo lifted her lips and growled. " That's a lie! He really does love me! You're just jealous!"
"I thought it was a lie when I heard it from another wolf's mouth. Found out I couldn't be nearer to the truth." Lunar said.
Echo looked out of one eye. "Who told you? Has someone been spying on me!?!?!?"
"It's none of your beeswax, you coward." With that she walked off.
Echo yelled as she walked off. "You're one to call ME coward! You won't even talk to Storm,you just yell at me!"
"I did, DEAF!" she broke off into a run, disappearing in the forest fog.
Echo snorted. She looked back at her beloved Storm. "What do we do now?"
Lunar ran faster, beginning to cry. She found a rock and curled up on it, feeling lonely and unwanted.

Chapter 3
Raven looked around for the alpha. She had a small warm feeling prickle under her fur when she was around Drifter. She thought, Your probably just sick Raven.
Drifter yipp
ed again,shrill and short. He was near Lunar. Where was Raven? He wanted to see her badly.
Raven didn't see Lunar so she slowly made her way back to where she last saw Drifter.
Drifter howled long,trying to get Raven to come to him.
Raven heard a distant howl. Her heart seem to lighten up and she dashed towards the howl.
Drifter perked his ears. Did he hear a noise? It sounded like feet. Raven's! Then he heard a noise he had not heard before. Crying. He turned towards the noise,seeing Lunar around the boulder. "What's the mat-" he cut himself short at recognizing the alpha.
Raven came to a slow trot. She sniffed the ground for any scent trails.

Lunar curled up and wearily cried herself to sleep.
Drifter dipped his head at seeing Lunar. "What is wrong?"
Lunar heard a voice and scrambled to her feet. "Get away! Just go!' she said and ran further away. She was sick of wolves.
Drifter hesitated. He wanted to see Raven badly,but he felt he should do something for the alpha. He ran after Lunar. "Wait! I can help! What's wrong?"
Lunar stopped, squirrels darting up trees in front of her. "My pack has fallen. I am not leader anymore. My mate deserted me and know Echo is the alpha female."
Drifter stared mouth opened. "I feel like were in the middle of a conversation! I have no idea who Echo is or your mate's name."
Raven trotted along. She could hear voices nearby and quietly headed towards them.
Even though he was in a conversation,Drifter sniffed the air. His heart lept as he smelled Raven.
"It's best it stays that way. Do-do you know where Raven is?" Lunar asked.
Raven soon recognized both voices: Drifter and Lunar. She walked closer, know not concerned of danger.
Drifter blinked. "Okay. Anything I can do to help?"
Raven wondered what they were talking about. She thought, Maybe she's going to except him into the pack! She crouched down by a base of a bush to listen to conversation .
"Yes. You can get Raven and then leave me alone. She's my new...just do what I said!" she snapped to keep from crying.
Drifter swallowed and went to find Raven. To his suprise he found her right there. "Lunar wants you."
Raven nodded slowly,"Okay." She walked up to Lunar and said,"You called for me?"
Lunar looked on the ground. "Yes. We need to go back to the rest of the pack and move."
"Move?"
"Yes. We have to. Unless stupid Echo didn't just steal my mate but stole the whole pack too."
Raven's jaw nearly dropped. She felt sorry for Lunar and decided it was best not to question further on what happen. She sighed,"Okay."
Drifter opened his mouth slightly. "What about me?"
Raven looked at Drifter then back at Lunar and asked, "Can he join?"
"What do you mean 'what about me'? Get away!" she looked at Raven. "No, he can't join."
"But we could use more members." Raven protested.
"No buts about it!" she leaned in close to Raven. "He's nosy. I can tell it. He's probably a spy."
Raven sighed. She knew Lunar wouldn't change her mind. She headed back to the pack trying not to look disappointed.
Lunar went back to the pack where she found only Buck. She looked at him. "Come on. We're going to fight for this pack. IT AIN'T GONNA FALL!!!!"
Raven asked Lunar,"What exactly are we doing?"
"Echo stole my mate because she hates me and she wants Blizzard pack to be hers. Storm doesn't even care. He hates me too and loves Echo. So this pack is going to fight for it's leader!"
Raven nodded. She would do anything to protect Blizzard pack and keep Echo's pack away and now Storm.
Lunar stood onto a rock and barked, wanting the pack's attention.
Raven and Oak looked towards Lunar. Butterscotch lifted her head from her paws to look at Lunar.
Klyan had just got back from hunting when he heard Lunar call. He padded over to the Highstone and waited to see what she would say. Kipkip bounded up and bounced on her paws expectantly.
Juniper sat close to the stone waiting calmly.
Lunar cleared her throat. She began her speech.

"My mate, the alpha male of this pack, my mate the alpha male of Blizzard pack has cheated on me, betrayed his pack, and lied through his gappy teeth to me and was busted a couple hours ago when I saw him with Echo. Echo has betrayed her pack, Hot pack, to be with my mate. We cannot let this happen. If Echo becomes his mate either I will be killed or Blizzard pack will fall. Here's the plan: half of you will go to Echo's pack, Hot pack, and tell them what has happened. The other half of you, will come with me to steal my mate away from Echo."
Raven's eyes burbed with fury at just the thought of Blizzard pack being destroyed. She howled loudly in agreement and was soon followed by Oak.
Juniper was disturbed by the thought of their clan falling apart like this...she was sad and scared. What would happen tho their pack? How many would die or be wounded in this feud? But she joined in the howl for vengeance.
Klyan was angry...he had joined this pack because he thought they were noble and strong. Now his own Alpha had destroyed those virtues. He howled loud and long.
Kipkip howled and barked in excitement. She didn't really care what they were setting out to do...if there was going to be fighting, she was in.
Lunar led the pack in the howl, Butterscotch's muzzled pointed to the rising moon.

Chapter 4
Akumu saw Lunar. For some reason he didn't like that wolf. He pounced at Lunar,lashing his long claws in the air while snapping his jaws. Lunar turned around and sunk her fang into his throat. She had had enough of other wolves. Akumu kicked her face and wrapped his tail around her throat, choking her. Lunar yelped. Butterscotch ran over to Akumu and jumped onto him, freeing her alpha.
Akumu dropped dead. The impact of Butterscotch had killed him.
Butterscotch felt bad that she had killed Akumu, but Lunar had no soft feelings. She went back to her rock. "Raven, Buck, Kipkip, Butterscotch, you three are coming with me to fight Storm and Echo. The rest of you are going to go to Hot pack and tell what she has done. Let's go!"
She bolted, heading for Echo and Storm.
Lunar ran, her brownish-grayish fur shining in the moonlight. Butterscotch followed behind her. Raven dashed after her and took her place beside Lunar. Lunar and the pack followed the scent of Storm and Echo. Butterscotch trotted behind Raven, her tail wagging and panting. Raven continued to follow. In the back of her mind she was wondering if this was the right choice.
Lunar padded alongside Raven. She saw wolf tracks in the dirt and followed them.
Butterscotch gave out a bark.
Raven shook her head and kept telling herself mentally, For Blizzard Pack. Her keen eyes scanned the area for any wolves.
Lunar bounded onto a tall rock, where she looked down and saw Storm and Echo. "There they are!" she yelled. Lunar began to make her way down a nearby hill of slippery leaves and mud.
Echo looked back. "How.." she hissed.
Raven's fur prickled ready for a fight. She quickly followed Lunar down.
Storm yelled. " Go, I'll hold Lunar off. I'll find you." He lept at Lunar and his teeth sank into her scruff.
Echo lay back her ears. "No! I'm not leaving you!" she crouched ready to fight. She only thought there were two wolves there.
Lunar snatched herself from his teeth and sunk her own into his paw.
Butterscotch lept after Echo.
"Go!!!!" Storm shook his head with Lunar's scruff hoping to throw her off balance in the mountains.
Echo bared her teeth,ready to sink them into Butterscotch. "No!" she yelled again.
Raven paused at the base of the hill. Drifter's last words she heard before she had leave rang in her head. It seemed that both alphas and fled their packs and wouldn't cause she. She seemed to be contemplating as watching the fight.
Drifter sat at the base of the tree. He had never belonged to a pack for very long,so he didn't understand why someone would spill blood when it was someone else's problem.
Raven suddenly dashed towards Butterscotch and Echo. In that moment she decided she would help them get away. She didn't fell like she was betraying her pack because even with two wolves chances of survival were low. She now would have to communicate with Echo to tell her. Raven thought, I will pin her and whisper my plan into her ear.
Butterscotch jumped onto Echo and rung her neck with her teeth.
Storm jumped at Butterscotch and bit her leg.
Lunar bit Storm's hackle and shook it violently.
Echo tried to tear from the wolves grip. She clawed and bit. Storm went for Lunar's throat.
Lunar yelped and fell down.
Seeing Lunar was stuck for the moment Storm went at Butterscotch. He lept at her and pulled her of Echo.
Lunar's throat bled. Butterscotch helped her alpha female up and then jumped onto Storm, while Lunar went for Echo.
" No!!!" Storm growled. He suddly had a huge bought of strength and threw Butterscotch off. Lunar wasn't going to kill Echo!
Lunar pinned Storm to the ground and snarled. "You shouldn't have betrayed your pack and mate to run off with this witch!" Lunar sunk her teeth savagely into his neck.
Butterscotch helped her alpha pin the wolf to the ground, her claws clenching his stomach.
Echo lept to her feet and latched onto Lunar's scruff and pulled as hard as she could.
Raven growled and ran at Echo. She launched herself at at her trying to knock her over.
Echo was reaching for Butterscotch's neck when Raven tackled her. "Let me go!" she growled.
Raven said in hushed whisper, "Do as I say. I will get both of you out here. I know this area well. Run now and I will guide you to the river by nipping your legs in tge direction to go. Trust me on this." Even if Storm had betrayed the pack, she wasn't going to let any wolves die tonight by another wolf.
