~Sunrise in the Distance~ A Wolf Story Based on SWCW

Chapter 5
Lunar still had a hold of Storm's throat. Butterscotch looked at Echo. "Look. If you keep fliritn' with my alpha's mate, we're gonna kill you. But if you can go back to Hot pack where you belong, and let Blizzard pack and it's members be, then we'll leave you alone. But you could make both packs fall if you do this." Butterscotch's blue eyes stared fiercely into Echo's.
Echo listened to what Raven said and gave a slight nod. Then she looked at Butterscotch. "Fine I will if you let him go." she lied.
Butterscotch clenched her throat. "DO YOU PROMISE?"
Echo hated breaking promises, but it was life or death. "Promise." she huffed.
Butterscotch let go of her throat. "If you break your promise, we'll take your life. That goes for anyone in this pack. We have a high standard of telling the truth and obedience, unlike you scrawny Hot pack members who betray your pack and cheat on your mate."
Instinct told her to jump and leap at her throat: Common sense told her not to move. Echo swollowed and rubbed at her neck before getting to her feet. "What will happen to Storm?"
"His life will be spared too if you go back to Hot pack and stay there. Your life and his are in your paws."
Storm gazed at Echo. Either way was bad. He would loose Echo or his life and hers.
Lunar let go of his neck. "Come with me. Alone. I want to speak to you..." Lunar said and looked at Echo.
Storm gazed at Echo. He obediently followed Lunar.
Lunar walked over to behind a rock. "Why Storm?"
Storm didn't look at Lunar. He stared of at the forest behind them. He let the question hang for a moment. ".............Because I love her."
"But why couldn't you tell me about...why was it so secret? Did you just want to cheat on me and our pack. I feel like an outcast."
"I didn't know how you would react," he said, his voice barely a whisper.
Lunar looked away from him. "Because....you don't love me?." she said hoarsely.
"I.....I... Your a good wolf Lunar. I would happily be your friend. I just.... love Echo." Storm said.
"You would happily be my friend. We've been with each other for years, and you act like Echo's the alpha and I'm a stranger or lurker or something. If that's how I get treated in Blizzard pack, then good bye Storm. I'll go back to find some other pack, where I am loved." Lunar walked away from him.
Echo stepped forward. "I didn't know that you had no idea,Lunar."
Raven listened to there conversation quietly. She was becoming impatient because she had a hunt with Drifter scheduled that night.
Lunar walked passed Storm and to Raven and Butterscotch. "Good bye, Raven. You'll never see me again. You or Echo'll become the owner of this pack, and probably let Drifter in and take it over. This pack has lost it's good history.
"I bet you both had something up your hide to kill me."

Lunar walked away and disappeared into the mist.

Raven was confused at first and called,"Lunar come back! That isn't true!"
Lunar wasn't coming back. Even if she had, there was a human about to destroy her.
Echo's hurt lurched. She didn't want Lunar to leave her pack stranded. "Lunar! You can't desert your pack!"
Raven sighed and decided to go after her. "Lunar!" the desperate beta called again and tried to follow her scent trail.
Lunar stood on the edge of a rock towering over a wide river. She looked down when a gunshot fired and shot Lunar. She fell into the waters below.
Raven heard the gunshot and raced forward and saw Lunar fall. "No!" She cried, but Raven knew there was nothing else she could do. The River was too far down to search for her. She retreated into the tree liners keep herself concealed from the human. Raven let out a sorrowful howl and forced herself to leave the scene.
Butterscotch's eyes were wide as she bolted to the rock where Lunar was shot. But it was too late; her body had drifted down a waterfall and was nowhere in sight.

Chapter 6
Echo, who had followed, yelped. "Look out! The fire sticks and up-legs are here!"
Raven paused and looked at the spot where Lunar was before she was shot and fell. Tears drifted down her face.
Echo raced forward and grabbed Raven by the scruff. "There is danger here! We can grieve later! We must get out of here!"
Raven let herself be hauled away like a helpless pup.
Echo let go when they were in the bushes. "I'm sorry." she whined. "But we still have to get out of here!"
A new wave of emotion flooded Raven. She growled at Echo,"If you had stayed away from Storm, Lunar would still be alive!"

Storm ran forward. He loved Echo but Lunar was a friend even through everything that had happened.
Butterscotch bolted after him. "Storm! Where are you going?"
He reached the river and ran down the side. He hoped the pack would come. Then he heard the sound from the firestick. He felt like his shoulder was on fire then he fell. Struggling he tried to get up. He saw the two leg approach, a sharp stick in his hand ( Aka a knife). He barred his teeth and growled.
Butterscotch followed him and attacked the human. She bit his face and throat as he fell over backwards.
Storm pulled himself up and swayed, unable to support wait on his left front leg.
Butterscotch got rid of the humans and went back to Storm. "What can I do to help?"
"Get the rest of the pack here, how many of them still trust me?" He growled through the pain.
"Probably none of them," Butterscotch huffed and ran off to gather the pack.
Storm limped badly the same way Butterscotch went. He stumbled and fell. Blood oozed out of the wound in his shoulder.
Echo rushed to Storm's side. "Are you alright? Stupid Firesticks!"
Storm didn't say anything. He leaned his muzzle against her shoulder. He turned to the remaining pack members. "Let's go home."
Echo looked back to make sure nothing dangerous was following them. She licked Storm's cheek.
Storm limped all the way back to camp, then settled in his den. He hoped Echo would follow. He needed to talk to her.

Raven walked back into camp with her head low. Many questions raced through her mind like would Storm take back the role as alpha of Blizzard pack or would, she, herself take over as alpha.
"Raven, Butterscotch come here!" Storm called out.
Raven approached Storm. She held her higher than it had been a few minutes ago.
"Raven, Echo cannot be alpha female because she is new to our pack. I need an alpha female for the pack. Since you are a wonderful beta and have stayed loyal to both me and Lunar I would like you to take this position." Storm inclined his head gently to the black she wolf. "Butterscotch will replace you as beta."
Raven was slightly happy because that meant Drifter could join, but Lunar had died which held back most of the happiness of this news. She questioned,"And what about you?"
Echo hung back as Storm talked to Raven and Butterscotch. She sat and waited for Storm to beckon for her.
"I'll stay alpha if that's okay with you?" Storm said.
Raven contemplated the idea in her head but agreed,"Yes," then added in a quiet whisper," Is Echo staying with us for good? If so, what about Hot pack? They're going to be alphaless."
"Yeah. I for one don't like Echo. If she would have never come around, Lunar might not have died." Butterscotch chimed in.
Echo couldn't hear them, but she watched their faces. She didn't think what they were talking about was very good.

Chapter 7
Raven sighed. She needed to clear her mind and said,"I will be back later. You two can decide." And with that she trotted out of camp and looked for Drifter. Drifter was still waiting under the same pine. He perked his ears, listening intently for Raven. Raven padded up to Drifter. Her mood seemed to enlighten just by the sight of him. "Hey," she smiled.
"I'm glad you are here. I was getting lonely. What took so long?"
"A lot happened. My alpha, a packmate, and I went to get Storm back and we fought but eventually a two leg shot Lunar and-" she paused remembering the moment, "Then she fell into a River and I'm sure she's dead."
Drifter frowned. "Sorry I asked. You have had a really bad day." He licked her on the nose and recoiled once he realized what he had done.
Raven was taken by surprise by his action but couldn't help but smile. Quickly changing the subject, "Ready for our hunt?"
"I was ready hours ago."
Raven laughed softly and bounded off in search of prey.
Drifter followed her eagerly. He hadn't eaten since sun-up.
Raven had caught a faint scent of elk. She slowed down and stated,"I smell elk."
Drifter's tongue lolled and he scanned the horizon. "There it is. It's eating some lichen."
Raven nodded and stalked towards the elk barely making a sound. Her black pelted melted into their surroundings.
Drifter followed, cautiously scenting the elk. It was a sick cow, infested with parasites. Good wolf food. Drifter pressed himself close to the ground and crept forward in small, fast, spurts.
Raven paused and poked her head up slowly. So far the sick cow hadn't noticed them yet. She flicked her eyes side to side looking for Drifter. When she spotted him, she flicked her ears as if saying, Ready?
Drifter twitched his ear and wagged his tail slightly, indicating he was ready. Drifter bounded forward and seized the cow by the neck. She started to kick with all her strength, which wasn't much.
Raven dashed forward and latched her fang's into the cow's belly and then released before it could kick her. She backed up and then leaped onto its back.
Drifter held on,biting hard. The cow jerked violently. Drifter tried to hit the fatal jugular vein.
Raven soon fell off the cow, but the grabbed one of its legs and pulled trying to throw it off balance.
Drifter finally hit the vein and the cow died. He backed away, panting.
Raven let go and sat down, catching her breath. "Nice job," she smiled.
Drifter caught his breath also and finally cleaned his bloody muzzle. "You eat first."

After the couple had finished both their share of meat, Raven stated,
"If you want Drifter, you can join the pack."
Drifter stopped licking himself. "Whatever you want me to do,Raven. You're my friend." He paused and looked into her eyes. "I want you to be more than a friend."
Raven's eyes locked into his. Her heart seemed to have leaped with joy and she said slowly,"I also...want you to be than a friend." She walked over to him and licked his cheek.
Drifter smiled nervously and groomed her fur. "You mean...I uh... you want...yes?" he stammered. This had never happened to him before.
"Yes Drifter, I do."

Drifter sighed. His heart soared. He was happy. Pictures flashed through his mind: Hunting with Raven, living in the pack together, and finally after the breeding season perhaps they would have pups. Drifter hopped to his feet and started running in a circle. He gave Raven a playfull nip, encouraging her to play.

Chapter 8
Storm laid down and called Echo in. He cleaned his wounded shoulder. It had stopped bleeding but it hurt bad. Echo softly nuzzled Storm. "Do you want to go somewhere private? Where we can talk alone?"
Butterscotch charged onto Echo. "You devil!"
Storm jumped up even with his hurt shoulder and barred his teeth and growled at Butterscotch for charging at Echo. He winced as a pain went through his shoulder.
Butterscotch looked at Storm. "Can I talk to you alone?"
Storm looked at Echo. "Go to my den." he said softly to her. He then looked at Butterscotch. "Come with me to the forest. We can talk there."
Echo dipped her head and licked Storm's nose tenderly. She shot a glance at Butterscotch. It was a pained look. "I'm sorry Lunar is dead also. I didn't wish for this to happen. I'm...really sorry." Echo turned and left. She lay down on the soft moss that lined the dirt. Questions raced through her brain. Why did Butterscotch want to talk to Storm alone? Was it about her? Why did everyone blame her for this? Would she ever get accepted? What would happen to the pack she had been Alpha of just a few hours before? She racked her brain for answers, but they did not come.
Butterscotch went into the forest, where chickadees sung and cardinals chirped, and the breeze blew and the sun shone warmly on everything underneath it's rays. "What a beautiful day, and such a sad one." she mumbled.
" 'Tis indeed," Storm said. "What did you want to talk to me about?"
"I know you make love Echo, but she still has a pack. And since the alpha female died it is Raven's job to become the next one, not Echo." Butterscotch paused before saying, "Lunar would have wanted it that way."
"There should be one extra up there tonight." he said. He looked at Butterscotch. "Give me time. I'll make a decision."
"M-m-make a decision?" she stuttered.
"Of weather or not I leave the pack." He gently set his muzzle on Butterscotch's shoulder. " Thank you,..... for being a good friend and packmate."
Butterscotch's eyes widened. "Leave the pack? Storm, you can't!"
"What am I suppose to do!" he growled. "I can't let Echo be alpha and she has her own pack. But I love her so what do I do!" Suddenly Storm lifted his head and pricked his ears. He had heard the frantic voices of other wolves. One he knew was Raven the other he couldn't identify.
"Let Echo go back to her pack and let Raven be the alpha of this one. Believe it or not, Echo has some bad history."
"But what about me?" Storm said wining. This was to much pressure.
"What do you mean 'what about me?' Raven will become your mate won't she? It would have been better if that Echo would have never come along."
Storm looked and felt like he was being torn in two. Between his pack and his love. "But I love Echo. I could be alpha and Raven alpha but Raven can't be my mate.
Butterscotch raised her eyebrow. "And why not?"
"Because I love Echo!" he growled.
Butterscotch flattened her ears. "I hate her! But you don't care about the rest of the pack! All you care about is that Echo! You never loved Lunar. If you had, you would have let her be alpha and Echo be packmember. I'm outta here!" she growled and set off.
"Wait! Butterscotch! I'm sorry. Echo can go. I want what's best for my pack." He ran after her. He got to her and sank down, tail tucked in almost a submissive position. One alphas never did. "Please don't leave the pack. I'm sorry."
Butterscotch pricked her ears up, surprised. "Okay. I guess I got kinda bossy."
Lets go back. " What am I going to tell Echo? She's expecting pups."
"Just tell her that it's not her place to be alpha female now that Lunar died and she has her own pack to take care of. She can leave after the pups come."
"Thank you," he said. He touched her shoulder gently with his muzzle. "You will make a fine beta for me Butterscotch. Will you accept this role?"
Butterscotch flattened her ears in a respectful way. "Yes."
"Then I would like you to have this spot. You have always been loyal to your pack and you kept me from leaving mine to die." Storm gazed at the sky.
Butterscotch smiled. "Thank you. It is an honor." Butterscotch knew that she was already acting as a beta: helping the alpha make important decisions.
