Sunshine, the broody Leghorn

Oh good for her! I hope she hatches lots of chicks. They are such good layers. Mine changed her mind after about a week. She didnt want to sit on them at night lol. She would sit all day but not at night and then just finally forgot about it. Our little leghorn, Blanca, will jump on you and want you to pet her she is so tame lol, she like my dh the best. She jumps on his shoulder and coos in his ear and he gives her treats LOL. He's such a sucker. Please post pics when her chicks hatch.

Mine won't beg for affection, but if you catch her and put her on your lap she is very sweet, and gets so relaxed. I've just discovered she has tiny bugs on her - mites? I started a diffent thread about it, but if any of you have any suggestions, let me know. I'm worried about trying to treat her so close to hatching day.

So my broody leghorn decided to stop setting on the eggs the day prior to hatching. Only 2 were viable and after being cold all night (because she sat OUTSIDE the brooding box with the eggs INSIDE it) Only 1 baby survived after all. The other must have gotten cold and couldn't make it. I threw her butt back out with the others and she has not been broody since. "Miracle" was hatched the following day in the incubator and is doing well. I have to order a few day old chicks to keep him company. Those leghorns keep messing with my brain......first they go broody then they decide that its enough the night prior to hatch.......urrrrgggg!

Thanks for giving me something more to worry about! Here I thought we were in the clear since she has held out this long!

Well, it was a bit of a fiasco but I dusted Sunshine and cleaned and dusted her nesting box. I had to move the eggs quite a bit in the process, and I really hope I didn't cause any harm. It's funny how they almost feel hallow at this point in their development. I hope they are okay - I was pretty generous with the powder, as I kind of panicked when I saw how many there were.
Sunshine went right back to sitting on them once I finsihed everything and she got a bite to eat and a drink. I hope she makes as good of a Mama as she has been as a broody. I'll post pics when the start to hatch!

Starting last night, we have peeping!! This morning there was even more peeping and chirping! I can't see anything yet, and she is sort of shifting her weight around and lifting up a bit, so I think we are close!! I'm so excited!

Unfortunately I already had to take two days off work this week because of my son being sick, otherwise I probably would have called in - and I am actually fighting a cold, so I totally would have gotten away with it! Oh well, BF is home and on chick watch, and says he has seen 5 babies, one yellow and the other four grey! He said one is really really chubby. I will take pics when I get home and post them. I made one mistake, which I will never do again - the front of the nest box is kind of high for the babies to get out of, so I placed a little thing of water and food in the box with them. BF found the smallest one in the water, but still moving and peeping. It was cold, and he put it under Sunshine right way to warm up. Hope it is okay

At least it is still fairly warm out. I will be stopping by a feed store to get a nipple waterer for them shortly.

I am up to seven out of eight!! The last one isn't making any noise or movement, no piping, so it may be a dud but I will leave it for now. I'm so excited - they are just adorable, and my Leghorn seems to be doing just fine as a Mama! Here she is, looking none to thrilled about being harassed:

Both of the Ameracauna have hatched -

Here is one:

Here is a group shot of most of them - I can't get them all in one pic, as they are content to stay under Mama:

Halo - I was expecting all the Blue Plymouth Rocks to look identical, but two of them are much darker - here is one of the darker ones:

What colors will they end up being? Just different shades? Thanks again for the eggs - I'm THRILLED!
