Super worried that my baby could be a rooster

I'm so sorry that happened to you.
But most roos are not like that, please don't hold it against them.

So don't be culling him until he's old enough to be sure he's a roo. 'He' could still be female.

If 'he' is a he, what will you do?
I second this.

Most roos are not mean, you do get those aggressive exceptions.

All the roosters I have ever dealt with have been the sweetest creatures on earth. Although it is not as many as most people, I have only dealt with nine roosters in total.

I would not cull him until you know if he is aggresive (if you want a roo, that's not aggressive) they can be amazing protectors of your flock 🥰

Don't let that one bad nugget make you hate roosters!

Well said!

But Emma are you not culling a roo because he's not purebred or something?

I am culling him because no one wants him and I don't have space for more than one 😔

Trust me, if I had enough space I would build a whole second coop just for him.

I have been trying for months to find him a place, but all anyone is telling me is he is not desirable or they want him for stew. 😔

Ok Emma, don't want to argue. Not everyone can keep and cherish their roos.
It's really sad, I wish I could have a batchlor flock. So I could love all my sweet boys and give them a full fufilled life.

Unfortunatly, until I move that is not an option, also he would be lonely as a house rooster.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. I just have no other option.

Infact I always dream about buying a few acres just for roosters to live out their happy lives.

I know that most roosters are not THAT violent, but I still need 8-10 hens for 1 rooster, right?

Given that I can't give him more hens, I think there are only two options if he's a he (let me know if you have better ideas): I can keep him separated from the hen, or sell him, maybe give it away in exchange for an adult hen so that the other hen is not lonely.

I don't care about the money, obviously, but I feel like if I just give it away for free he could end up killed and eaten... If I sell him like the purebred bird 'he' is, he could have a chance of having a good life. Broilers are the "cheap", poor chickens that are raised for human consumption here.

These are my thoughts. Please let me know what you think. I just want the best for my babies, whether they're male or female.

No not necessarily.

I have 2 roos and about 10 hens. And trust me they are all happy. Please don't disrupt his life unnecessarily. Obviously, if it doesn't work, you'll have to do do something. But WAIT until 'he' is grown up.

Wait really! I have never heard a story with these ratios working. If it works for you maybe it could work for me...... Thanks for this bit of hope! Also OP sorry for crashing your thread, I'll stop now.

PM me to talk about it tomorrow, OK?

Goodnight!

Maybe it will work for you, depends on roo/hen temperament.. And if they grow up together it might work out well.
I have 1 roo 2 hens and in another coop 1 roo 3 hens. All happy and healthy. They sometimes end up with 1 roo to 1 hen ratio when I have a few broody. All is fine. My roos respect the hens wishes normally when they don't want to mate... My sister has 3 roos and 1 hen!! All brothers and sister grew up together and get along.
I'd say just see how they go, then decide if it isn't working you'll have to find another option.
