Who'd a thunk I'd get so attached to chickens?

One of my Black Star layers got broody and looked so sad I ran off and got her some fertile eggs. Shes now the incredibly proud mom of 5 almost-week-olds, and today I observed some marvelous behavior:

The Hen-ladies all love sorrel, so today I pulled some and brought it over to the fence. The other 3 adults gobbled it down, and poor Dark Twin, locked in her special pen, was going wild because she couldn't get at it. She could see the branch I saved for her when I opened the cage; she was so anxious she was jumping for it. I figured she'd wolf it down too, but the first 5 or 6 beak-fuls she got, she carefully dropped at her feet. The little ones rushed over to try it, and not until she saw that they'd had their chance did she eat the rest herself. Mother of the Year!
