Hey y'all,

Our hens get a layer feed crumble, but I was wondering if this is OK to give to Pilgrim geese (2 males, 2 females)? They're about 8 months old, if I recall correctly. They don't seem to have much interest in it, and have so far grazed on grass for 90% of their feeding. With winter coming, I'm wondering what's the most appropriate type of feed to supplement their diet with, assuming they want to eat it.

I've seen a couple of other threads that talk about "generic waterfowl" feed, but am having a hard time finding anything like this at our local TSC, except one that is supposedly for mixed poultry/waterfowl up to 18-20 weeks. Purina seems to sell a Layena for mixed flocks > 20 weeks (although not available at my store) but would that be OK for the ganders too?

Thanks!

Hey scractch.... glad to see your geese get to graze grass for their diet. To supplement, check with your purina dealer to see if they can get Flockraiser for a complete base feed. Geese also like a variety of whole grains. Whole corn is good for cold winter calorie supplement.

You wont find the waterfowl feeds at TSC, they are contracted to only certain feeds. Find a local feed mill or feed store. You can use Purina or Nutrena web site to locate a seller near you of either brand. one makes a Flock Raiser, the other an All Flock. Either are acceptable for the geese and gander both. There is also Mazuri waterfowl feed (also has a web site). Whole oats, Whole Wheat, Whole Black Oil Sunflower seeds are all good mixed into the base feed for them as well. If you are facing grass dieing off for the winter you will also want to find a good soft hay, we feed oat or an oat/timothy blend depending on which we can find. Avoid alfalfa with the geese they dont care for it.

Thank you both for your replies. I'll check with the feed store the next town over. It's a bit out of my way, but they may have more of a selection of the less common stuff.

Here are the direct links for the brands I mentioned, will save you some driving around looking for what is in your area.
