Supporting snow in winter

Which is the best solution to supporting the snow?

  • Current set up would support the snow weight if flat tarped

  • Idea of securing mega heavy duty tarp to garage and edge of run should work fine.

  • Neither is a good idea you need to go the hard route and better brace the actual structure.

I've notice similar builds with wood center supports and wood framing on the ends, but I'm not so sure it's needed.
The Tposts going up a foot on the outside of panels really helps support the arch to hold all that snow, and those look like 'hog' panels which are one of the strongest panels with smaller hole spacing than some other livestock panels. The difference in stiffness between hog panels and cattle panels is significant. The lattice adds some strength too.

I just meant that I think people go to extra efforts and expense to support the middle with a beam and the ends with other wood framing and I don't think it's necessary with the way she and her husband built this particular coop, so long as it's in the open with no large trees overhead.

Correct! The lattice will certainly add at least some strength and more is better, always.

I have a bunch of old cattle panels which are made much heavier than those I am finding now days at TCS or Rural King. They're cheap and thin these days.

However, Rural King in my area doesn't carry the Red Barn Brand, but for some reason they have samples of Red Barn Brand panels that are 1/4" wire...much thicker than what I'm seeing locally at box stores and my feed stores. I want to buy some more of the heavy ones if for nothing else, but to put my string beans on.
