Hi!
I got a call from my mom today explaining this story:
So last night my parents went to a Rotary Interact Fundraiser and as usual my mother had to use the little ladies room, when she came out my dad surprised her by winning the highest bid on the largest item there....a chicken coop!
Now to give you a little perspective why this is such a shock, my father is a full hearted business man, born and raised in Salem, OR. He has always lived within the city limits and never on anything larger then one acre. Right now he is running for city council which has had a lot of debates about chickens in Salem in the past, and has never been known to overtly care to have the mess of things such as compost. Our neighborhood is one of the nicest in Salem, with large houses and a country club....
that being said, when I found out that he bought a chicken coop I was in complete and utter shock for almost an hour!!! I love animals and am the extremely excited for this, but it seems so out of his character!!!
Apparently withing city limits we can have up to three chickens... I spent all afternoon researching chicken care, breeds, etc. I have come to the conclusion I DEFINITLY want a Silkie chicken. I have always loved unique looking animals and silkies seem wonderful!
Because of our neighborhood we need chickens that are not very loud and we are interested in layers but also good pets.
So that is my introduction to the Chicken world!! I hope I can continue to learn more and fall even more in love with these beautiful creatures!
