Surprise Duck . . . How Do We Care For It?

What a cutie, looks like a mallard duckling. Game bird starter feed, or chick starter feed and water. A nice secure brooder enclosure with a heat lamp and a small stuffed animal for company. You can even offer smashed up egg yolk as a great protien source.

you can add tiny live meal worms to the feed. often the movement will trigger feeding instincts. It is done with hand raised wood ducklings. Adding another duckling will often help too. you can also try tapping the feed with your finger tip showing where the food is and encouraging feeding action.

I had a wood duckling for not quite 3 days and I was able to get it to eat waxworms (a type of grub). I just happen to have them because I have a bearded dragon whom is very spoiled. And she would eventually sip from water but I had to keep dipping her beak. So if you can get some mealworms that would be helpful. Also Petco/pet stores often sell Phoenix worms/Reptiworms and they are basically a fruit fly larvae. Very small and very digestible and an excellent source of protein.

On the 3rd day she was just starting to nibble on flock raiser with the worms in there.

He's eating egg now! He figured out that if he nibbles my hand, he'll eventually find the food I'm holding. He ate a good bit for his size, and he's been drinking.

Congrats, keep up the great work. eventually you wont have to hold the food. just treat the duckling like a new born human child as far as offering food and making sure its drinking.
