Surprise in the nesting box...

My grandson Evan goes back to South Dakota every year to spend the summer with his dad, stepmom, and his other grandparents. My ex-son in law's parents are great people, and we share Evan's life in photos and posts on Facebook, as well as spend time with them when they come out here to pick him up. They are volunteers at the Sertoma Butterfly House in Sioux Falls. This year when Evan went back he got a surprise. His grandparents, Jan and Paul, arranged for him to be a volunteer too! He got a T-shirt declaring that he was "staff" and he did a fantastic job. He can tell you the names and habits of more butterflies than most people can ever imagine existed. He fed, he cleaned, and after just a short time he actually qualified to give tours! Yep, not bad for a little guy.

But his biggest accomplishment was getting over his fear of spiders, and in typical Evan fashion he did it in a big way! This is Evan with Lily, the Sanctuary's resident tarantula.

Not sure if you saw the movie "Heaven is For Real", but this reminds me of it sooo much...In the movie (based off of a true story) the little boy visits a butterfly house and doesn't have the courage to pet the tarantula at the butterfly house. After his near death experience in which he sees heaven, he is un-afraid and has his parents take him back to the butterfly house where he holds a tarantula. This just seemed like a scene right from the movie haha.

I read once that no matter where you are there is always a spider within 5 feet of you, i believe that i got spiders in my truck, on my tractor heck they are every where  Years ago when Hurricane Rita hit us i came back home after being gone a month and when i stepped out of my truck i noticed the ground had lots of movement so i took a closer look and it was spiders, i want ya to know that for weeks every time i took a step hundreds of little striped leg spiders would scurry, never seen anything like it, they were thicker than a disturbed ant pile.
Oh I know we have spiders, just not plate sized ones ! We have wolf spiders and at this time of year and they love coming in the house where it's warm....big buggers....don't mind them but I do squish them. The only spiders I leave alone our our daddy long legs because they are so gentle and have never bitten us. And we don't have huge ones that dangle from webs over my bed! It's too cold up here for those big ones. That's what I was meaning;)

I much rather a big spider get on me at least i can see them, them darn wee ones are the onces that bite my butt and every where else in between.
Ever had a spider on ya but can't find it?

Oh yeah, I never, ever saw or felt the black widow that bit me on the back of the neck (I think it fell on me and got spooked by my hair hitting it when I was moving boxes around over my head in the garage) and it got me two (maybe three, it was hard to tell on the third) times. Oh boy did I get sick from that.

I did, however, see the scorpion that stung me in the middle of the night after I flopped over onto it in bed. It was pretty easy to see after I turned on the light

since I had a pretty good idea what I was looking for at that point...

chiggers, fleas, ticks, small spiders all bite you before you even know they are there

Oh WOW! That's too weird! I've never seen that, but you can bet I'm gonna find it and watch it now! I asked Jan (Evan's other Gramma if she'd heard of it and she said the same thing. <hum theme from Twilight Zone now>

It wasn't in the nest box, but she was still a surprise.

May be the most pregnant spider I've ever seen and all dressed up her Fall Finery! Marbled Orbweaver.
