Surprise Necropsy Finding-Leg Injury Leads to Death in Pullet (CAUTION! Necropsy Photos!)

Thanks for the post Cynthia.

I can't imagine how anyone would be able to figure out that mass was related to a broken leg down low. Like you said, so far from the actual injury. Do you suppose the original fracture was from flying down off the roost or is there some other possibility? Chickens do fly and I would guess even if they had a ramp, they would fly off more often than not just because it is faster when someone comes to let them out in the morning. Mine are REALLY READY as soon as they hear me come in the barn. Lots of talking and lots of flapping before I even get close to the coop door.

Bruce

Bruce, I really don't know. They are bantams and fly quite well. Their roost bar is 5' up with lots of shavings on the wood flooring, not really that high for their breed, but I may end up lowering it after this, just in case. They have a step up lower roost bar that they use to get up, but they never use it coming down, of course. Their coop is low to the ground, so no actual ramp needed, though I have a very short one, and the pen is covered with roost bars set into the fencing across the corners a couple of feet off the ground. She is at the age that the rooster in charge was noticing her and her half sister so he could have been rough in mating her or she could have been sparring with one of the cockerels, as I've seen her doing often. Hard to say how it would have happened; just too many possibilities.

I'm sorry you lost her Cyn.
