Surprise!! We're getting chickens! What species to get?

I recommend using MyPetChicken.com's breed selector tool to pick the breeds you want based on your needs and wants. I ordered from them because I could order a small number of chicks. I went the "I'll take one of everything" kind of route -- 12 chicks. Love, love, LOVE the variety!

I then succumbed to a case of chickenitis and chickn math. I now have 23 pullets and 11 roos (all but 2 are going). We still have about a month to go before we can start expecting any eggs........

This addiction is delightful. Like others here, we began with four rescue buff orpington hens, followed in rapid succession with four red sexlink rescues, by two barred rock rescues, by two americaunas, by five little silkies, and when one turned broody, by five auraucana chicks for her to raise, followed finally by six assorted day old chicks that none of the silkies would mother and I had to hand brood. Deciding we had too many hens with the maturing pullets, we advertised to rehome the oldest of our hens, sold six, and promptly went out and bought four year-old golden comets. Sigh...

To answer your question, in time,in a mixed flock of varying ages and personalities, they sort out the pecking order which is natural behavior for chickens. They all adjust to their position in the flock, live accordingly, and thrive. Endless enjoyment to us when they free range in our backyard in the evening while we relax on the porch, tossing treats their way. Have fun! ~G
