Raven quickly looked around to see if anyone had heard, then lowered her head. Her eyes widened at Minty's reply and she gasped. Covering her mouth with a paw, she said, "Well, yeah, but... Won't Unka Jiy'Ken notice?" Jade pounced on a cricket and snapped at it, crushing the bug in his teeth before spitting it out again and making several sounds of utter disgust.
Dixie followed, her whole body depicting her nervousness of being so near humans. The entire territory reeked of human scent and her legs quivered as she imagined getting caught by such a thing. Looking to Mystery, she offered a weak smile.
Minty leaned closer to her sister, her eyes shifting from her to Jiyaken and back. "We just gotta wait until he looks away," she whispered. Her green gaze stopped on Jiyaken at last as the big gray dog gave the two young she-dogs a suspicious look. Hearing Jade, though, he looked to the young male, chuckling lightly. "Oops, tha' don' taste too good, does it, lad?"
"Now's our chance," Mint murmured, starting carefully toward the junk pile. Jiyaken hadn't looked back toward them yet, and so keeping her pawsteps light, Mint started at a trot until she reached the junk pile, at which point she began the steady climb to the top. This was so exciting!
The area was thick with humans, with scents of pet dogs here and there. At one house, a tiny house dog yipped and yapped at the patrol as they passed. Scarlet, who was on alert already, hardly noticed the little dog as she led the way.
They came to a pond, a very unnatural one that the humans had obviously dug. Its banks were vertical walls, tall and smooth. Mystery eyed the water far below. If a dog fell in there, it would never be able to get out alone. There was no way out...
Scarlet marched around the edges of the unnatural pond, hardly sparing it a glance. "Watch your step," she murmured over her shoulder, for she already knew what Mystery had just realized. This place was like a death trap for a dog.
