Surviving Minnesota!

This was the worst week of my chicken years.

Today I lost one of the juveniles, a hawk probably.
5 minutes before I had counted all 7 then went to close the garden gate and came back to close the coop thinking they were all inside. The adults were but didn't see the juvies anywhere. Walked all around calling finally three came running and went in, then found 1 dead laying in the weeds. Puncture wounds to the head. Eventually found the other 3 hiding under a brush pile afraid to come out but got them inside.
Saturday I culled an old girl that wasn't doing well. Thursday Goldie died. Tuesday Edna died.
It has been every other day, I'm afraid of what might happen Wednesday

So very sorry for your losses. I think maybe it is harder when they are younger because they have not lived long. They are still babies and dependent on us. Where the 4 year old girls had a good life and got to enjoy it for quite some time. When my Baby died, she was only a year old. I cried. much of it because of the life she could have lived. My girls now are 2, I would feel bad, I would probably still cry, but I know they have had a wonderful life while they have been here. I guess baby did too? I just was not ready for that at all

My goslings are for sale! They will be a month old on the 15th, and its time for them to find new homes.

Is anyone interested, or know someone who might be? http://marshall.craigslist.org/grd/5634497830.html

Is this an April Fools day posting??? Some is really trying to sell a goose? I had to give the last ones I had away, and pay the guy mileage for coming to pick them up. I questioned him on that and he said "Well, you pay the garbage truck, don't you?"

He was right so I paid him to haul them away..

I have just made a swap with Ethel for her eggs. I gave her 11 live and kicking Guinea eggs. I got bit and struck with her beak about a dozen times for my efforts. Her eggs were all clear. Now on the 16th she should have babies. I hated taking the eggs from the incubator, but figure it is worth the risk to give her some babies.

OK I'm getting over it, we love them for their sweet chicken ways but yes they are just chickens.

We had my MIL staying with us the last few days, she has Alzheimer's. Not a way to live... Lots of sucky days. Guess I've just been overly sensitive because of having her here maybe.

I can identify with you on that..... And I feel for you. It seems we take care of our kids and no more than get done and we take care of our parents...while we await our turn to be taken care of again.

I sold some chicks today to a teen about Holm's age. She was just like him nice farm girl and her Dad who bought her the chicks for her birthday! I do not believe when I was
14-15 I would have asked for chickens for a birthday gift. I was impressed with her chicken knowledge too. Her Dad seemed to really like Andy. They wanted to take him home, but as we all know Andy is not for sale. They came for 6 Speckled Sussex and left with and additional 2 creamettes and a creamer.

I invited her to the thread here, she says she belongs to BYC so hopefully she will show up here. They are very nice people. Why is it most chicken people are so nice?

I asked for chickens for my birthday, in November, since I was 5.
I got some on June 5, 2013 when I was 12.
I had a ducks a year before but they were eaten by a raccoon, who I mercilessly shot to death after trapping.
For my 14 birthday I asked for another chicken coop. Did it happen? No. Instead my dad put in 2 windows, one you have to use a nail to close it and the top always falls down, the other window never stays up and leaks. We also painted it red, but I had to do 3/4 the painting...
This year hopefully I will get my new chicken coop, or even a chick coop
I love selling birds to younger kids though. The best was when I sold a family, who came for 3 ducks, one of my orange chantecler roosters they were so impressed with him
