Surviving Minnesota!

Ralphie, we have met in person, and I know that you are many years short of the 100. If you do not plan to move south for the winters, I say go for the gusto. These enjoyable life's activities help to keep a person young at heart!
Then again perhaps you do not wish to turn a hobby into a business venture?

There is some of that for sure. Having done that too many times . I think it is time to NOT do it and just enjoy what I am doing.

No Loretta this morning or this afternoon. Dixie is still in the big coop. Everybody else ranging. I'm guessing she is afraid to come out. She saw something. No sign. Not one adolescent feather. It's not looking good. Still upset about it.

I think I'd still have a chick too if I had a rooster. Even though they don't hang out much the Littles would heed the Roos calls.

Dang it all.

I'm so sorry about Loretta

but I am glad you had some other chicks to fill the void for mamma Dixie!
Francis (the wood duckling) hadn't been doing to well for the last few hours...
She just passed away a few minutes ago.
And to be honest this is the saddest I've felt over a bird dying since my first rooster died....

Hugs for you as well for your poor little duckling, you tried and that's what counts! Maybe the cat had hold of it once and lost it and it may have been injured internally

Judy is actually semi-supportive of my hatching. She gave me a "short" honey do list and said if I get them done I can build a new hatchery. I would use a 28x40 garage package (minus garage doors) as my starting point, then insulate and divide as need be.

I am actually the one reluctant to do this, as it makes little sense to start a business venture at my age.
This is a hobby????? Wow.... just from your talking about all your birds and all the hatching you do...I was starting to think that you actually had a hatchery business? Good for you!

I have some good news about my little whistling GLW..... I dosed the flock with oregano, garlic, basil and a heavy dose of ACV in their water and after 2 days she came running out of the coop in the morning to eat and there was no whistling to be had! She was breathing heavy too , the night I posted that she was sick. No whistle and breathing normal.

I am thinking maybe it wasn't respiratory and a piece of grass or seed was stuck somewhere because she perked up and lost the whistle awful quick! Still gonna dose the water with some VetRX for a few days to be sure.

Heard back from my friend who has the connection with the lady that took Roger's son. This is quite the riga-marrow to get a rooster--I'm sure you all think I'm nuts at this point--so I'll just keep rolling on with my Chicken Days of our Lives-- Anyways understandably she wants two more weeks to be sure it is a rooster. So we are roosterless in northern Cass until further ado or RJ (Roger Jr.) has revealed his colors in a more certain way. We'll do fine. The hens find it nicer to stay in the shade and cover of the Hydrangea bush up by the garage. It's a pretty safe spot with Sadie Mae Traffic and ours as well.

I'm chicken sitting this weekend for my chicken friend. So that will be fun. See how her littles are doing, etc.

It's so gorgeous out. I think I will paint my coop door and do some coop clean up. Wipe cobwebs. Freshen nests etc. The shavings are good. Just need the detailing done.

Good luck, I have been trying to pawn off a rooster on her for weeks.....

Of course, being James the hawk killer came from my flock, I could always advertise them has hawk defense birds and get twice as much as I normally get from all of you...

I am pretty sure now I have 2 little roos and 4 pullets, they were hatched the 1st and 2nd of May. The one that a hawk killed was also a pullet. Anyone want an EE roo they are FREE
