Surviving Minnesota!

Hi there!

I'm from Stanchfield, MN

I now know how it feels to lose my favorite chicken too! About 3 weeks ago, we lost 11 of our friends. 3 adults & 8 babies to a fox! Cinnamon, our RIR was top hen and my favorite. Daisy, our white Leghorn was my hubby's favorite. It happened so fast, it must have been only a few minutes before we caught him. We were devastated!
We used to let them free range but we haven't since the accident. I'd like to take care of that fox before I let them out again.
They have plenty of space in the run. Aside from the fact of danger, do you think chickens are healthier free ranging?

I'm not happy to hear about your birds! Glad you didn't get discouraged on your first try! You're right btw, predators should just stick with wild game!

Enjoy your coffee and have a beautiful day!

Ivie. I am feeling sad, you did not have a going away party for Tom. I bet my sadness over the going away party is trumped by Greg's joy. He will be able to walk to his shed without a baseball bat again.

Welcome to the thread...

I like to free range but it is fraught with dangers and death. Do you have a rooster? Not that they are much help against a fox, but they would give the chickens a chance to hide.

We should have a predator feed, where we sit around drink MIke's and feast on predators. Fillet of Fox, Crispy chunks of Coon, baked Eagle, Hollandaise sauce over grilled hawk,,,,,

I hope you are safe from predators for years....

Erli, sorry noting to comment on your post, besides I am still trying to NOT see the green bug when I read your posts........

Jerry enjoy your easy day. We have some rain to the west of us, I assume it will develop and we will get nailed again.

Violet which state fair are you going to today? We have a while I think before it starts. You mean a county fair?

I still have a blame* cockatiel, He is really wanting to go to one of your homes. He does not like me he only hisses at me, but sings and whistles to Judy. The Mosquitoes have just about put an end to all outside work.

More coffee,,,

Welcome to the thread Sparkle Chick.

After reading what Minnie has gone through in the last couple days with storms it makes my problems seem pretty petty. Good luck with the continuous clean up Minnie.

So I have had my fair goers (6 hens and 2 roosters) in quarantine since Sunday, now the 2 roosters (brothers) are going at each other. While I like the idea of flock protectors and fertilized eggs.....these late teenagers/ nearly adult roosters are going to make me go gray.

You are sure right there!

I have the horny one in the pen by himself, I need the pen, I might just throw him in with the other roosters and hope he survives. I hate to be cruel, but I really need the space and he is not big enough to eat.

He was trying to jump my Dominiques, those are protected babies, no rooster may touch them.
