I do all my own wiring. What size wire do you have coming out of the meter/service box? Is the wire Copper or Aluminum?
Do you have a "farm shut off" Most old farms have them, I do. It makes wiring easy.
Some of the inspectors can be a pain in the rear, if they have the "only a union electrician can wire" if not they are a breeze. There are both types. The one in my county is pretty decent.
I do think a 100 amp is wise if you plan to weld or use heavier motors in the garage. If it is just going to be 2 circuits and a door opener, 50 is plenty big enough.
If you are not sure of yourself find an electrician that will let you drench and run the wire yourself, Most rental places have trenchers.
If you are coming off another box to the garage and making a "secondary box" make sure you separate the ground and neutral. That is a relatively new change but the ground and neutral cannot go back to the same bar like they use to. You have to remove the grounding screw.
You will must likely need to add a second grounding bar. good luck.
