Surviving Minnesota!

Kloppers.

I do all my own wiring. What size wire do you have coming out of the meter/service box? Is the wire Copper or Aluminum?

Do you have a "farm shut off" Most old farms have them, I do. It makes wiring easy.

Some of the inspectors can be a pain in the rear, if they have the "only a union electrician can wire" if not they are a breeze. There are both types. The one in my county is pretty decent.

I do think a 100 amp is wise if you plan to weld or use heavier motors in the garage. If it is just going to be 2 circuits and a door opener, 50 is plenty big enough.

If you are not sure of yourself find an electrician that will let you drench and run the wire yourself, Most rental places have trenchers.

If you are coming off another box to the garage and making a "secondary box" make sure you separate the ground and neutral. That is a relatively new change but the ground and neutral cannot go back to the same bar like they use to. You have to remove the grounding screw.

You will must likely need to add a second grounding bar. good luck.

I moved my Fufu's. Well the Polish ones.

I think I got screwed over on my straight run. Tell me if you see a pullet in the pictures:

I know the pictures are bad. I thought the bottom one might be a girl. If not I was sent 7 males on my straight run. Of course, this is the same place that sent me 6 males out of 8 cuckoo marans on a straight run. I know they knew they were screwing me over on the Marans.

Jerry, the doms are very young. I think they hatched on May 6. I wish they would fill out fast, but I know that will not happen. Which is why I will be getting my birds first next year.

That last one is a pullet . I agree they knew . Hey you could make a Breda type comb with the PC and the polish V comb . No real comb like the Maiden rock .

400

Here's the finished door for the Cochins. There's 3 more also. We did the first one didn't like it that much so then we did it with the screen being cut off inside of going around to the other side. We then caulked the edges of the screen to prevent it from fringing.
I'm really glad we used window screen though cause know there will be less flies, wasps and other bugs in there

Kloppers....just showed your post to sister in law who is electrician. She said find a new electrician. She recommends 100amp out of the gates and recommends conduit or piping because of gophers and crap chewing through the wires. Sorry she is union and can't help you out.

She is right on the gophers if you do not run it through something it is a chance you take. I have been trying to get EJB down here to trap the gophers for the fur, but so far he has not taken me up on it.

Also running through a conduct or PVC pipe makes it easier to run other wires if you ever want too.

I finally got around to making some PVC pipe feeders! I cannot believe I waited so long. Are they ever nice. I watched the birds try to waste feed and they simply cannot do it! I will be using them in every run, coop and pen except chicks from now on.

Thanks for the advise all. I think the main reason he wants to replace everything is because it is the older fuse type connections from the meter. I think they are 100a fuses with a big throw lever. He wanted to put in a 200a transfer switch or something like that.

I will look around for trencher rentals in the area and see if that is an option. DW has a cousin who is an electrician at a manufacturing company. Maybe he could advise and help with the hookups.

Either way I think I will get a second opinion

I have some of those old cartridge fuses around here Kloppers. They are a pain in the rear. I am changing them out as I get time.

The Quonset shed has 10 gauge wire running to it (underground) with 4 circuits on a 100 amp fuse. Speaking of fire waiting to happen. My Dad use to weld in that shed. I can't believe the welder did not burn the 10 gauge wire up. I am gradually changing everything to circuit breakers and a decent amount of circuits.

I am also burying wire to the Quonset. I am using number 2 Al. It should hold 100amp. I had the electrician change the mask on the pole this spring and drop me a 100amp shut off, in addition to the farm shut off. There are some things I will not do either..

I had to have the electrician do some work on my Mom's house . Even though I own her house and it is on the same parcel I cannot do any work on it. The law only allows you to work on dwellings you own and live in. So I am stuck having to hire on her place.

Jerry I had to look "breda" up. I then looked at some Polish crosses. There are some weird looking birds that can be made with them. I wonder what a CLB/Polish cross would look like or a White Sport Polish!

I can make my own Fufus!
