Surviving Minnesota!

Good morning! We are off to the Ortho and then another child to the eye dr. Then VB after school. How do I ever keep up with life? Haha

Don't you wonder? And then they are gone and after a while - quite a while - life begins, somehow to settle down. Still busy but in different ways and you wonder even more how you kept up and did it 'all'. Enjoy the sunshine and have a great day.

I meant more on toughness/tenderness. At what point do they get more tough? Under a year table birds and over a year stew birds?
I butchered some roosters this year....Hatch date April 7th Cooking date was September 20th and they were tough. (I think it may have been because they were Barred Rock and Buff Orpington....the buffs were regular pains.)

Sounds about like the conversation (aka direct orders) I had with my hubby last night as he was packing for the week of outta town work.
1. Have a discussion with the kids about doing what Mom says the first time....not the 10th.
2. Do NOT invite your nephews to join 4H at this meeting because it would result in Auntie driving them to every meeting. (Hauling 2 kids around for events is enough.)
3. Do NOT respond to social media requests to bring snacks for football, 4H, scouts or gun safety. If directly asked you must respond with, "check with my wife....I am not in the same state as her."
4. Your Dad will need to take a raincheck on any baked goods he thinks he deserves for taking care of unwanted critters.

Ahhh but life would be boring if we were not kept busy with this that and four other events all at the same times in 2 different towns. :)

I think BYC is having email issues with my account. I got another slew of midnight email notifications of posts and ovations and stuff for things that happens during the day yesterday. It confused me when k wake up from a dead sleep to an erratically buzzing phone

Ah 4-H! We stopped 4-H because I had to make life easier. We live 14 miles from town and to get 5 kids ready for the fair just became too much. We will show our chickens in open class. It is a very small county fair in Red Lake County. Pretty much will bring our chickens just to fill the barn, not because they are show quality. I don't suspect many up here will even know what they are looking for. They did come from Cackle and I have heard they try harder than other hatcheries to improve their stock.

My husband is pretty good about not volunteering me for things. I am the one who always wants to help out and then stress about all I have to do. But I am getting better at saying no. Especially since I applied for Grad school a couple weeks ago.

In regards to 4H I loved my time in the club as a youth and I would say that it taught me many life skills. I hope kids are still interested in that.

I hope some day to get involved again and be able to 'lease" animals to kids to show who can't raise their own. I haven't yet because I no longer have any contacts in the local extension office. Some day though...

Oh I plan on letting them join again in a few years. I just needed a break and something had to give.

We give them a lot of hands on life skills at home too. We run a family construction company and the kids work with their dad on and off all summer long. Plus all the animal chores. There is a lot of learning in their daily lives.

Our eldest daughter has friends who don't like us raising chickens and don't think our eggs are better than store eggs and so on. I told her it is fine that her friends believe what they want but they should watch Food, Inc. on Netflix. They are a bit on animal rights side but I don't think as 13 year olds they realize that our chickens are raised much more humanly than anything bought in the store. They will grow up one day.
