Just gathered this morning! The one on the left is 97g the middle 59g and the right 99g! Ouch! I have two girls that lay extereem sized eggs! Just out of my Red Sex link hens. I believe they were ISA Bovan. Average is 60-70g eggs.

Jerry, how did you manage to fall off the roof and make me feel like I did? 

I was sure today was going to be horrible, but it is actually pretty nice out.  I had to go out and check on one of the turkeys. The stupid thing refused to go to bed and roosted on the top of the bird netting support pole.   Even a turkey has to be exceptionally stupid.  He sat up on the highest point where and owl can take him with no obstructions. In addition Turkeys being almost as dumb as ducks can get stuck in the netting.  I had one get stuck in the netting and tip upside down, had I not seen it in time and cut it out it would have been compost. Which BTW is a good use for ducks but not turkeys.............


I am thinking of taking a little walk in the woods, these last few warm days might have hatched  a few edible fungi out there.  Or  I could do what I should and work in the yard/coops.    I am thinking I should have a "seminar and training session" here for all of you.

The items we will cover are:

  Picking up stuff that make it hard to snowplow
How to build a incubation and hatching room
Building Poop boards and splitting a coop into to parts
The proper way to stack bales on a well pit to prevent freezing
How to assemble and fill a 'portable" garage for mowers and such
The proper way to use a chain saw
How to bathe a extra large turkey
How to build a toad fence


I am sure there are other items we could cover, the best thing is I have decided to forgo the normal tuition for this seminar and offer it as a free seminar to help each become better chicken wranglers...


My generosity overwhelms me on occasion, this is one of those times.


BTW Judy wants to add " how to build a front steps and deck"   I am not as concerned about that one.

Watch out with the red sex links. Mine have gotten to the point where there eggs are huge and I'm sure I'm going to have to cull them before the eggs burst inside of them.

Toads are a breed of chickens.

Alrighty folks, I've been thinking about going rogue and put pine shavings down in my coop this winter instead of the hay I always use. I'll keep hay in the nest boxes. I think I said the same thing going into last winter, but was never brave enough to try the switcheroo. Thoughts on shavings vs. hay? I don't supplement heat in my coop if that makes an opinion difference. This could be a temporary or permanent change.

We just built a new shed...we made half of it a coop. We bought a piece of linoleum and put down on the floor then put shavings down and a whole bunch of leaves. My husband usually goes through the yard and cuts up the leaves with the lawn mower and then picks that up. We put those cut up leaves in the coop on the floor. Probably about 6 inches at least. I was just reading that actually sand is the best to have on the floor but i didn't go that route. I am going to bag up about 4 bags of cut up leaves to add on the floor throughout the winter. Leaves are awesome as they are loose enough for the poop to fall through, plus they compost nicely. Every few days you can stir up your concoction of shavings and leaves and so far i have not had any odor issues in my coop. Also, i added a sand table underneath their roost. Makes for easy clean up and less poop going on the floor.

Judy thought they were cute, but I do not want them. If we ever moved to Togo, I would get some, so I could feed the wolves. I think ducks are cool on the lake but not in my yard.. BUT do not tell Bantychooks that or I will never hear the end of it.
