Surviving Minnesota!

I cleaned the coffin so it is ready for the next batch today.

I have another barn rooster. I let Ed out of his cage to wander the barn. Ed and Bert met, I thought there might be a fight. There wasn't they are both equal wimps. Bert did run at one point when Ed went to eat next to Bert. Ed had the " What did I do look?" In case you do not know the look, it is the one us husbands give our wives most of the time when they 'raise their voices a tad at us".

I stole this from another thread..It might apply to some of you,,

I got a call from a guy wanting some layers, he does not want a breed that lays 250 eggs or more, he wants one that lays 1,000 a year...

Anyone have a suggestion?

He must go to the Planet Mars, me thinks....

Okay so just to set this up.... Junior suffers by comparison to his predecessor. And I don't mean to pick on him ...because I think it will come. But he is a treat hog. He does not gift or share. Roger: if I sat down with a Pint of blueberries and handed them to him one by one would not eat a one. He would give it to the lucky hens surrounding him. Bick-bicking away, "I have a treat, I have a treat." Roger also took runs at us and would flog us once in a while. Especially spring. Protective of his hens.

Junior is well shall we say a good boy to us humans. Not one incident of trying to run us over. He is so so good to us. But the hens...well he has some lessons to learn. He is in a pecking order fight with Sylvia still, I have seen. He's very pecky with her. And if there is a treat in the bowl he sometimes indicates treats with bicking about it but eats it anyways.

Today in the bowl was bits of mule deer (venison) and walleye. We had an up north Surf and Turf last night. And Junior...I had to giggle could not contain the bick bicking this morning. LOL. I wonder if meat treats will help him figure out being more gallant? He's just not a year yet, and maybe I didn't pay careful enough attention to Roger...but actually I remember seeing Roger in the garden with me when he was a cockerel and Rosie the RIR was in the garden too and remember him gifting at a very young age. Maybe some fellers have it and some dont? IDK....I think Junior will figure it out.

Tell him you know of a great place to get those chooks... Up on cloud 9, next to the rainbow-farting unicorns....

BC I am not surprised Junior is good to humans. He came from the great @Minniechickmama and she doesn't put up with mean roosters ;)

Junior is a Welsummer from Minnie right?

Junior is a Welsummer from Minnie right?

Yes. She told me so about the breed and she has selected against mean-ness. I definitely like that about him....but I would also like him to be nicer to his ladies. Just needs to go to charm school or something...

Edited to add that he does seem to like Patsy Cline....who is also Welsummer. Bird of a Feather working there....

Hello Chickeners . . . . What a great day! Took both of my sewing machines up to St. Cloud Sewing Center for an annual (suppose to be annual - mine are bi-annual) tune up. Perfect sunny day to be traveling around

BC - your birds look so nice. I am going to do some pictures on here with my birds. Gonna go get them right now! They do not look nice!
