Where is the chatter? I have time to do some reading chickies!
I have been following those threads too. I dont have room to add another breed so I am just gonna love them through his pics and that thread!Good Morning Holm. Yes! I do have more plans. And I just read another thread Ralphie has listed at the bottom of his page. Interesting reading. And I need some reading before I get off this puter. I want to talk to my neighbor and another friend just down the road on Cnty Rd 4 that raises chickens about the toads. I would not mind having two and am wondering if they are interested also.
Good Morning all.
Both sets of of brooders are doing well. Chicken Math is working at it's prime. As for the comment (from a certain chicken enabler) Ralphie (Cough Cough). I like to say that I am helping my daughter cope with not being able to get her PC's at the same time as her brother got his Dominiques. Young girls are so emotional at this age. (Hopefully, everyone read right through that line of manure.)
Well....truthfully, we are trying out a few different breeds to see which breed(s) we want to focus our energies on. I know the son is hooked on the barred black and white look. I am just glad I got him to move to Dominiques from Barred Rock. (Lovin the smaller comb for MN winters).
At first my daugher was hooked on the Buff Orps but the hatchery stock stayed nice and small (imagine that) when she got the actual show quality birds they were big and fluffy. So of course we were having problems getting proper mating to happen and well a 10 pound rooster with 6 inches of downy fluff was more than we (Mom & Daughter) could handle. Then we got to hold the infamous PC's and someone has been head over teakettle in love with them. Even to the point of demanding that a certain breeder's rooster does his business right here right now in front of her.
So we are going to give a try with some Buckeyes and Rhode Island Reds. We didn't loose much in the weight category of the Buckeyes but we hopefully lose some of the fluff. The RIR are for the brown egg laying division of 4H and the buckeyes hopefully for the breeding trio. (As fate would have it I sorted out the chicks last night and started putting leg bands on the chicks from Urch and we found that we only have 5 Buckeyes (we ordered 8) so we are going to punt. Whoever looks the nicest at fair time will be the trio for 4H the rest will be Open Class.)
Hats off to all the breeders that bust their bottoms to get their chickens to breed and lay for early Jan/Feb hatches for all of us 4H families! Your work does not go unnoticed!![]()
MNchickmom I really think you will like those Bucks. They get to be hefty birds but my scrawny little sister coukd show "hers" with no problem.
I can see why she loves the PCs! They are magnificent birds!
