Surviving Minnesota!

I'm debating roofing material. I was thinking about going with corrugated translucent material and not having any other windows. Thoughts?
I've got shingles but I'm leaning towards tinning instead of replacing shingles. We have tin on our house and it works great with keeping it cool during the summer. I have windows in my coop, we put two in. They were old windows in our old house that we kept after we replaced windows. One thing I really like about my coop is that because it was an old grainery it has 2 auger hatches on top. Because hot air rises most of it goes out through them and usually the coop is colder then 80F. If it was a really warm day I leave it open at night also, but I don't have any trees by my coop because if I did I would not leave it open.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't the translucent material cause a greenhouse effect and overheat in summer sun?

I have the metal roofing on my coop, under that is 1 1/2 or 2 inch Styrofoam sheets for insulation.

I was planning 4 sq ft/bird, so 4x8 was thinking 6-8 birds. Is that too crowded?

I have one 4 x 8 run with a 4 x 4 coop on top of it. I have one big roo in it (Reggie the CLB) and four hens. 2 are BO; 1 is a CLB; and the other is a RIR. All needed space away from the other hens to heal from some pecking issues. They do fine. Once in a while a CW will spend the night with them. But the five are plenty in that coop UNLESS you are going to free range them. That changes everything.

LOL ILL! for a moment I thought you were telling us that you had a condition called Shingles which is a BIG deal.

We had it on our old house over a porch and it kept it really cool actually. It did crack very easily though.

Fair concern. I thought the same thing, but was thinking winter. Each of the two 8 ft sides will have 1 1/2" vents at the top that will run down the length of the side. Currently, that will be only ventilation other than chicken door and clean-out door.

But . . . my understanding is that you will have a 4 x 8 coop with run space under it plus another uncovered run attached to it at 10 sq foot per bird. That is plenty of space for run. the coop at 4 x 8 is 32 sq ft / 3 = that is enough space for 10 birds inside and you only want to do six to eight - so that works wonderfully.
