Surviving Minnesota!

Good morning!

Holms you should offer classes on what makes a good breeding heifer. My brain and eyes are trained to look for steak making abilities. I like to believe you are never to old to learn new things...some of us just need to be taught in a repeative way.

Ralphie- don’t you dare make wicked deviled eggs. You have done so much with your lines. Plug in that incubator and get collecting!

Here is a glimpse of what we have going on. Day 21 started last night at 8:00pm.

In the 2nd picture you will see my husbands creative idea for marking trays. Can you tell he was born/raised a dairy and steer farm boy. My chicks are brought into this world seeing an ear tag that has been manipulated to work. I didn’t want metal with sharp edges, I wanted to be able to disinfect it, we attempted to engrave it with the short hand letters to match the eggs but ended up writing the long hand with perm. Marker.

Any toads hatching? The baby pics are contagious... I might have to bake my eggs for 3 weeks yet.

We didn’t collect toads for this batch. We are hatching bantams and large fowl at same time and hoping they share the same brooder. Toads and bantams are polar opposites so we waited until batch 2 which is due January 20th.

Busy day here..Sunny and warm..
I changed line of a couple reels, the WW screwed them up by over working the drag the other day. I had a snarled mess that attacked the end of the rod when I tried to let line out.

I cleaned and changed water on all the birds today, it was actually pleasant outside. I fed fish guts and the leftovers (after cleaning) to the turkeys and roosters, they appear happier.

I had a toad escape on me today. I am use to the SS trying to escape, but not the toads. I brought fed and water into the toad pen and one hen snuck behind me and out the door before I got it closed. They are so fast and with their gaunt twiggylike bodies I just never noticed her sneak out..

I had to run her down, it appeared she was winning, but in true Toad fashion she stopped at a turkey feeder to grab a bite to eat and I caught her. She complained the whole time I carried her back to their pen.

I am thinking of having a greased Toad catching contest next fall when they are in peak condition.

I should have went fishing but alas I did not get out. Maybe Sunday.

Ralphie- did your wife provide a large amount of protein for your family....that is the only reason I can think of that you may need to restring a line.

If that is the case can she offer fish “catching” classes to my husband and kids.... they have been catching bait sized fish when catching anything at all.

She usurped my line while I was outside the house tending to her tip-up. She thinks she is incapable of putting a minnow on a hook.

Her idea of playing a fish is twist the handle on the reel as fast as she can and let the line twist up.....

Jerry, If I was to leave her home alone it could be disastrous. She might snoop in my stuff and find something before I have owned it long enough to tell her I have had that for a long time...
