Surviving Minnesota!

You guys are just too busy on here - I tried to get through all the posts in the past week or so and gave up. Clearly, I need to better prioritize my work day =)

I've been busy nesting....or that's what DH says it is. I'm obsessing over getting everything set up and functional in all my coops/pens and also inside the house. Baby will be here within the next two weeks. I decided I'm going to downsize a bit and get rid of some older layers that don't lay much anymore. A few of my older favorites will stay around forever....the crabby ones can go. Kinda getting sick of their granny panty attitude. Shape up or ship out.

And because I know how much Ralphie loves ducks, here's a few pictures from my latest clutch! The few I kept back for myself will be moving out of their "nursery" this week. I didn't plan on hatching more this year, but my blue Scovy was sneaky and gathered eggs in a bin I never check. I tried to boot her out and she ran back and attacked me. She won't even flinch from that nest when I'm around. She can keep the stupid eggs! Holy crap.

Wow, she has quite the Peafowl business! They're definitely a bit more touchy than chicks or ducklings. I try not to handle them too often, but make my presence known. They know where their food comes from. I've heard of people mixing cat food in with their regular adult feed to maintain good protein levels. I don't think cat food is unheard of for chickens, either, especially for molting. I think the sodium content was the only concern, but who knows. I even considered mixing it in last winter. Oh, and thanks for the info!

I did find some at L&M. They only had one bag, which surprised me. I'll check out Martie's when this bag is gone - muuuuch closer than GR.

Do you feed all your little ones higher protein?

I feed all my turkeys and Guineas Higher protein feed. Depending on the age of the birds and the time of the year makes a difference as to the amount of protein. At the least I feed 20% broiler finisher. I actually feed higher protein to everything because they all eat together. The chickens get too much protein the turkeys too little,,

..

The most important time IMHO is the first 4 months and then 2-3 months before breeding season. I feed them separately then. They are in breeding cages and separate pens. The turkeys and Guineas do not like that, they prefer to be with the chickens. (stupid birds).

If they do not have it at the St. Francis store they can get it in a day. Elk River does not always have it. Monticello always does.

Thanks a lot! Nothing I like more than a picture of good looking fox bait!

Ralphie, I am scratch-the-head baffled. Those chicks were in strict lock down! I think that tree is hollow further up and something is climbing in from the top and then back out again. Obviously not a coon. Thats too bad.

Are you still thinking of doing a freezer camp in October?

See Ralphie Ivie thinks so, so you better check. Get a flash light and lay on your back and scoot your head into the tree hole

Seriously I'd check.
