Jerry, which mushroom books do you use?

I did online this time . I suspect it is the Prince but waiting for a spore print . The cap slightly shaggy but does not show in the pic . On books I use the one I can find . Did not look yet .

Did it smell of Anise and bruise to yellow?

I am still in my beginners book, it has rule number 1 which says " never ever pick a mushroom with gills"..


I have not got beyond that yet. I do remember my Cousin telling me about a mushroom that smells like licorice and is real good to eat though..

I am going to stay in my beginners book for another 20-30 years before I go to the advanced one.

Ralphie boy it just goes to prove the old adage that " shot happens", and as long as you are still on this side of the ground there are better days ahead.

We had a very fast race from Northfield yesterday with the birds to my loft average speed of 1,848 yards per minute. 168 air miles and home in 2 hr & 40 min. They traveled at an avg. of 63 mph. They go to race from Albert Lea on Friday. It will not be as fast as they will have head winds or cross winds.

Ralphie I failed to make a ID on the mushrooms . The book I used is the practial mushroom encyclopedia .I have a book by Paul Stammet of fungi perfecti and the Audobon field guide somewhere . I do not like the field guide . The book says the Prince stem is heavily scaled . So no match . Failed to put a cap facing down so no spore print . They are drying out now so past prime .

Ralphie, our transport driver is not a club member and is from Belle Plain, so he released the birds and then went to his home. We meet just south of Bruno to register our birds and place them in the shipping crates. Then one of our members meets the transport driver in Hugo from where he drives the birds to the release site.
We have four races left in our young bird race season. Albert Lea, Northfield, Fairmont & Mitchell, SD.

Most people on here have probably never heard of Bruno,Mn?

Good morning, I have had breakfast and lots of coffee so I am ready to begin my day.


I think I was a bad person yesterday, I did not mean to bring the thread down with my trials yesterday. I will try to report good news around here today.



My son called and I lost my train of thought. It happens, at my age I am lucky to have an engine and a caboose on my thought train. If I have cars they are all empty.

I have three books I use:

National Audubon Society " field guide to Mushrooms" Great plates but the text is hard to read. small and broken in my opinion..

"Peterson field guides "mushrooms", great descriptions and a few good plates but way too many confusing sketches.

Mushrooming without fear by Alexander Schwab. it is by far the easiest and bets for a beginner like me. Great pictures and a checklist on each species. The problem is there are only about a dozen species. I am going to see if I can find more books by him. He seems to really make it safe to pick mushrooms. Each species even has a color palate to check the color of the shrooms against.
