Surviving Minnesota!

I cut firewood yesterday afternoon . So much easier loading into the tractor loader bucket . Drive right to the wood . A concession to age or maybe just using my brain . Rain coming tonight .

I moved about 2 cords of wood on Saturday with my tractor. It's way better than carrying it but still takes it out of you!

Good morning All.

Auditors at work so I'm up with the chickens... and old men, myself.

It was raining on my windshield on the way into work. Yucko if that stuff starts freezing. It seems quite balmy out right now compared to the last couple of days.

DH is making 'Apple Pie' tonight. For his cousins who are coming for Thanksgiving. I have to say it is pretty good. too smooth.

Sylvia came out of the run yesterday wanting to walk up to the house. But the walking path is not very good for chicken feet right now. I suppose I should get my shovel and start scooping so its a little bit nicer for a chicken stroll. But I'm sure that aligns with cuddling class somewhere in the spoiling of chickens. I'll get to it when I get to it. interesting to see her out there. She is obviously still lead bird. Not the new cockerel.

Good morning everyone!

Yesterday I passed my first aid certification in PE. My friend Conner and I talked deer for the whole bus ride home, I really like talking to him, other then Owen he's the least D-bag guy in my class. Got home went down to take check the chickens, some of the water had a thin layer of ice on it, this weekend I will put the heated water base in the coop along with finish stuffing hay. My dad and a neighbor were out taking the pickup off the hill. I waited for them to come down, so I sat by the grill in which my dad was smoking a 8 pound pork shoulder. After the neighbor left we took the pork to the house and put it in the oven while we had supper, just to cook it a little longer, long story short I was watching some volleyball games on YouTube, when I went to the kitchen for water and I hear something sizzling, its about 9 now, I open the oven, hear my dad fell asleep and forgot about the pork that had been basted for 8 hours smoked for about 12, and now cooked for about 2. So I woke my dad up he took the pork out. It was basically ruined... We'll have to go buy another one

BC, I believe that your DH is spoiling you! Does he not know that unless he owns a Bakery that baking pies is definitely woman's work in the marriage manual?

Layers, too bad about the pork, as my mouth was watering at the thought of it smoking. Volleyball has become big time in this day and age both at High School and College levels. I know that both the U of Minn. and UMD are highly rated in their respective divisions.

I only have a small quantity of firewood which is ready for the woodstove or fireplace, but I have several cords of well aged lags ready for cutting and splitting. We usually burn about 3 cords a year because my wife likes it. I would just turn up the temp on the gas furnace if it were totally up to me, but I feel the need to humor her so meals and pies are ready on time!!

Quote: Amazingly for as detached from the chickens as he appears to be they are very well taken care of. I panicked in Florida when I heard 9 degrees overnight and told him to heat the front part of the coop. I unplugged it yesterday when I got home. There were 10 eggs yesterday!!! I think that is alot out of 14 hens this time of year. Very happy to be back. I always asked about my chickens while I was gone and not about my dogs. The chickens have it - the dogs are okay.

What breed is this handsome guy?

Its not a rumor, its from a member of the school board, who has a kid in VB. And honestly Volleyball is my way into college which I why I care so much, and you need a winning team for scouts to even come and watch and our team has only won 3-4 games out of at least 40 in the last 3 years.. Our current Varsity coach has probably won less then 15 games in her coaching career.
The parents are having a meeting in the next week. I know that getting a new coach is a lot of work etc, but all the parents are for it. Our school board also just hired 4 new coaches this year and "fired" 3 so I think people are finally realizing that we us kids have the potential but not the coaches. If the vb thing goes through we will have all new head coaches in every sport next year...

You think Volleyball is bad. Try Hockey. You see a whole new side to parents.......and some kids.

@Minniechickmama my Hova is a still air.

You can buy a cheap computer fan for a few bucks and toss it in there. I hatched fine in my still air hova, but I felt I had to babysit it more than I liked. I liked my hovabator and don't hatch a lot, so I ended up getting the hova 1588 earlier this spring. Too bad you don't live closer. I won't be hatching next year and you could borrow it.

The winter topics on the home page are interesting. Just goes to show how everybody does something a little different.

I'm keeping the birds locked in today. It rained for a bit not too long ago, but I expect snow soon. I got all dry bedding down yesterday and don't want rain or snow getting in if I can avoid it. Plus, I have a few birds that will just stand there shaking with a few inches of snow on them. GET INSIDE! Lol

I don't play the high school sports political game very well. So my kids are on JV and not on Varsity. You have to work at our school to get a kid on Varsity in the 8th grade. You do a lot of ticking off of families and players when you move 8th graders above 10-12th graders who bust their butts with the best of them and pay for expensive camps, drive to and fro for summer leagues, and then get benched behind a youngster with political pull and a bit of talent. And it ruins programs when they all quit. So I'm against moving up young kids. Personally. I've watched our girl Basketball program almost decimated by this strategy. DH says it's been going on since the beginning of time. Just because it has doesn't mean I have to agree with it.
I don't care how good you are. Alot more comes out of comradery and team play than personal acceleration. "There is no 'I' in Team." And if it isn't 'fun' any more then you're playing for the wrong reasons. Running is an individual sport.

And as for coaches. There are good and bad. For certain. DH coached Little league the few years that our kids were in it. He saw it all....as there is as you can imagine a myriad of 'parenting' techniques being reflected in children and their attitudes. And he would take the heat for who was playing and who wasn't getting played enough. We had an excellent coach for a special tournament last year who volunteered his time in June for this tournament. We played tough teams and faired not so well at that level of play with a small school team. One Mom came unglued with this guy...while everyone else thanked him for his time and efforts. Guess who looked the fool.

My two cents, Layers. Go to school, get educated. Sports second. I like you're tenacity and I think you'll go far. You're certainly driven. But you better have a back up plan. Getting involved with adult "Days of our Lives -Sports -Politics" will give you nothing but headaches and maybe even a fight that you know maybe whole story-maybe not. Keeping the drama on the Down Low has always been my motto and served me well. I tell my kids just go out there, enjoy your friends and game, have fun.

Soapbox is kicked out from underneath BC.

Ed. This apple Pie is a liquor recipe bottled in a Mason Jar. I would love the baked goods. So alas I'm not as lucky as you think I am.
