Surviving Minnesota!

I think making soap would be so cool. I have a bad feeling I would botch it though and burn all my skin off.

I never thought of this until reading the recent posts. How do you know how strong home made lye is?

If you're going to make soap, I think you should make it all!

I got my second appletini egg today. Frozen and cracked.

It is 29 degrees here but feels chilly/cold. I have been in and out about 10 times to try and get good eggs. I am still losing at that.

Sorry the eggs keep cracking Ralphie.

Stepping in on BC territory and maybe she will verify, correct and add her wisdom to this. When a person mixes the lye solution and the oil solution together it is unusable as soap. Then it processes through a chemical change called saponification. It is my memory that after the solution is poured into a mold it must not be used for at least three weeks while the chemical reaction takes place (which begins the very moment the two liquids are poured together) When BC gets back from the BB games I hope she will comment on this.

Additionally, I took my recipes from the book and was not brave enough to learn to put my own ingredients together to experiment. All this soap talk is making me ready to begin making ours again. And the reading recently of an article banning so many different chemicals from the anti-fungal soaps now on the market.

I cant remember what this is called but I've never seen one in person!

The hay above is from 2015. Still green, moist, and the blossoms are still on the alfalfa all reasons we use a sickle mower to cut hay

Being a huge fan of both soaps and oatmeal stouts.....you have now, unfortunately, piqued my interest!!!!! I need another hobby like a need another chicken :barnie
Do you happen, by chance, to have any of those bars left? Could I buy one and try it?!!!

I don't have any left. It was a while ago and I made it with a friend who then took half the bars. I must have gifted or sold the rest because I don't remember even using it myself! Should retry it. I will make a batch.

Ivie you are correct. Raw soap is unusable for about two days. Saponification seems to be done after those two days. Then you let it harden and dehydrate for 4-6 weeks. This will make the bar last longer. Usually I will grab bars after a week though for use in the shower. They don't last as long but that's ok.

Different oils do different things. I use a combination of Palm, coconut, olive oil. Castor oil gives beautiful suds and bubbles. Then I add either coco butter, mango butter, avocado or Shea butter depending on the recipe for extra richness. Olive oil very mild and moisturizing.

Lol. Ralphie. Not going to set up lye making any time soon.

Ivie your not stepping on toes. You probably know more and you have a way better set up.

Jerry how much for those June berries? I've got too many irons going...

Dropped one kid off at school at 7:30 Am for tournament in fosston. Went back played in ice bocce tournament. Now dropped off 2nd kid for double header in Nevis. Waiting for fosston player to get back now then we'll drive to Nevis. Today is a whirl wind!
