Surviving Minnesota!

To cull a mean rooster at 6 weeks or let him finish out and be invited to dinner? That is the question.

Anyone who draws blood from 5 hens and me, then grabs a yokahomma by it's head and throws it is destined for a life of solitude.

Cull him unless he is important.

My new black Cochin cockerel is a little bugger, he drew blood on me and the blue hen I want him to breed... type before personality though.

So I am sitting at my puter at the table and up the river comes a Bald Eagle. I rush to my boots to get outside to my hens and the eagle is after ducks on the river. I gather my hens in - there are a total of 20 and there are always these two that do not show up. So eighteen are in lock down which means they have access to an outside run, their typical covered run and a little coop with nesting boxes. So plenty of space.

that wind is going to get nasty this evening and they would be confined for the next cple of days anyway. I think I need another roo. There are too many hens for Reggie to be able to protect. And Reggie likes to be on the homefront instead of out and about taking care of the wanderers.

I know where you can get one or a dozen for the same low price!

I think we have enough pictures holm from your phot-barrages to know where you really 'live'. LOL. No worries holm we won't think less of you for living in a small town.

What breed was it?
It was a dominique from you Ralphie. (No insult intended) He has a brother that is in the same pen and seeing as my son wants to show a trio for 4H this little buggar may not be around much longer. I removed him from the pen and put him in confinement and now everyone seems to have settled down nicely. (The yokies, the remaining doms and the single cream legbar.) So I am certain it is just one bad apple. I may be starting the rooster pen early.....or he may become skunk/racoon bait depending on my mood.

I have that one rooster out there that is a jerk, He is the only Dom I have that is, but he looks so good, I still use him and another one. I hope it is not inherited. (too much) all the others are sweethearts....

So far my roosters have been just fine, actually a little on the meek side.

You might want to raise him alone instead of culling him. knowing his blood lines and his early age, he could tame down. With his family looks he could do well if you can knock the attitude out of him..Give him to your daughter she tamed that jerk SS rooster in no time

So just got back from Monticello. Still no sign of the hens. Two young ones too and they lay so faithfully. I mean, take the old hens dumb eagle. Not new ones. Ugh! How can two disappear just like that? We will see at coop time - its just very unusual for them to disappear like this.

Ralphie - I don't need a Tom Hanks but something between docile and going to fight for his girls. Loose two hens - add one rooster? How will that work for Reggie? He is such a sweetheart. Maybe another one will make those that pick on Regina leave her alone. What do you think of that reasoning?

Egg production is up and so is water consumption . Still Leary of setting up the low pressure water system . Might freeze up still .
