Surviving Minnesota!

Cow is good, we will be watching her just to make sure all the after birth came out, we think it did but can't be sure since she did lick the calf off.

3 weeks early, and when we let the bulls out put it was so hot that they didn't do much so most likely 4 weeks early. And I didn't post this this morning because my dad was not 100% sure since he was feedig but the leg is flopping around. They shouldn't need help the one bull was my uncle's that he used on longhorns cows and the other 2 are both from a local guy who breeds for easier calving.

How old is the cow? 3 weeks is nothing. Everybody we have talked to us saying their calves are coming early this year. Plus from breeding date they can go twp weeks before due date or two weeks after. And it is so easy to miss tem getting bred. When it's hot and they are laying around the bulls will wait till night. This depends on how far she is into the cycle.

Dead calf. She had it by herself. After my dad went to town to get the battery and gas he came back tried to start the pickup wouldn't start. So we went out with the tractor, barely made it up some of the hills. Found the cow, she had calved already and it was dead. Maximum 30 pounds and was not fully formed yet. My dad and I cant count and the calf was anywhere from 4 to 9 weeks premature most likely.

I find this odd. How old is this cow? It is not normal for them to abort a calf this far along? Is she in with a bull? Is she overweight? Underweight? Well she will make great freezer beef. Unless you try breed her again?

Not sure i think she would be 5-7 years. Like I said the calf was at least 4 weeks, since i can't count

, and up to 9 weeks also. No bull with them, good weight. We will try to breed her again no sense in jumping to conclusions and assuming she can't ever breed back again over something like stress or injury most likely.
Everything is calving early this year Our neighbors heifers started earlt and he's already had to shoot one calf, but stuff happens and we are ok with that.

Good morning!

We are under a winter storm warning today and going to get hit with up to 9" of snow. Looks dreary so far but not a flake yet. I work from 2-midnight today and its a 30 mile drive each way so hoping it stays south of us again.

I went to New Ulm yesterday and it was packed with people. The pigeon auction was nuts. They were able to get about 1200 of this breeder's pigeons up here. Some really nice birds, some unbanded breeder type birds, and some junk with dq's. I saw prices go $2.50 to $10 each on ALOT of the birds. Of course every breed I was slightly interested in went for $25-60 a bird. I had to get to work so I didn't even hear the last half of them. I had a lot of self control and came home only 5 Muscovy hens that I went for. The swap section wasn't huge... ALOT of people looking to buy stuff, but just not many sellers there. It was cold, but thank god the coliseum was heated.

My friend from WI posted pics from the big Fond Du Lac swap. Well over 1000 people through the doors and I think most of the poultry and ornamental bird sellers went over there.
