Surviving Minnesota!

Morning Jerry. Fiddleheads! I'm thinking of summer tomatoes! R2elk is already harvesting homegrown from his greenhouse. I've been craving them ever since he mentioned them!!

What do you do with those?
I grew up without ferns around before I moved to MN so pardon my possibly silly question. :D

We dry them and string them together, wearing them and surrounding all the doors and windows to our homes to protect us from the Zombie Chickadees in the area...

Some people eat them...the problem for me is finding them and then making sure it is not the lookalikes taht can make you ill.

A spring green . The ostrich fern grows everywhere at the lake . Early May is time to pick up there. Pick when still tightly rolled as pictured . There is a red/brown film or skin to removed as it tastes not so good . Boil or stem and add butter . Many wild greens for those of us who can not grow spinach well . My season is iffy for spinach . Your season is probably impossible . Not enough heat units before the end of may . Spinach goes to seed triggered by day length .

About 2 inches of the fresh white stuff here. Forecast is for high of 45 so most should melt. The chickens were a little skeptical regarding leaving the run today but they soon ventured forth. Free ranging may not be too productive until the sun comes out and things melt.
