Surviving Minnesota!

I have the battery operated one. (Well actually I have 2 because I can’t charge the battery fast enough during show seasons.) I have one of my assistants hold the bird while I clean the toes. I find it works really well after a good bath soaking the nails. If there is a lot of nail to remove, I will clip with a dog nail clipper first and round out/file with the dremel. I am guaranteed to get my own nails sanded down during the process.

I just got some BO Bantams from Vern H.

I have a sensitivity to soy. I was getting nasty headaches and they completely disappeared when I cut out soy. Since I avoid it like the plague in my food, figured it’s prob a good idea not to give it to our chickens. Corn I am not totally against because I realize it provides energy and helps them put on some weight in the cold winter months. However, there is not a lot of nutrition in it and since we are going to all the effort to raise our own healthy birds, I’d prefer to give them the healthiest nutrition profile I can. Well, that is, the healthiest I can without spending our children’s college tuition on chicken feed

I know I am slow on this, but my dad used to feed soy free feed. It was whole grains, pretty sure there was corn. He quit though, because he said the chickens picked what they wanted and wasted the rest.

If you want to try though, I think your best bet would be to find a feed mill that either makes custom mixes or sells all the components separately and mix it yourself. Not sure where you live but Anoka feed mill and Peirz are two that might have what you are looking for. Otherwise just call feed mills near you to see what they can do for you.

I looked into this myself when I first started, because yes, it would be ideal. I just don't have the money or ambition to work it all out, drive so far, etc. Lol

I’ve been the recipient of my parents’ garden and green thumbs. Their garden is producing and may I say the chickens have donated to the soil in their garden too.

Cleaning their garage today I found my Grandpa Elmer’s scale. Eggs were Grandma’s business and money but Dad told me today that Grandpa Elmer was worried grandma Gertie was getting ripped off from the egg buyer so he bought this and weighed her eggs for her. Dad rolled his eyes telling the story. Lol.
