It's day 3 in MN of arctic wind chills with temperatures from -60 to -50! :th We didn't want to risk losing any of our hens so we brought them inside on Tuesday night and made a makeshift run in the basement. To make them feel more secure at night and give them different "scenery" we move them to covered dog crates to sleep. I'm looking forward to temperatures above 0 this weekend. Be safe and stay warm out there!

I’m not questioning the decision to move inside because I have seen over the last couple weeks many cases of frostbite that is permanent and will result in loss of parts of combs and toes. I also noted someone whose chicken froze to the ground by the feet. This happens all too easily. A few deaths from freezing to death of younger birds. I thought about it but not quite that cold and I am up to double digits above freezing here so doing ok with heater in coop but if got much colder would not hesitate to bring mine in. I alone am freezing at the coop bringing water to them and touching icy items. I almost stick to it myself. Hope your temps rise. Mine are still happy layers and our temps are rising.

It finally creeped up to above freezing and brought icy drizzy to turn the driveway into an ice skating rink. Maybe a couple more warmer days and then will plunge again :hit
