My flock consists of my 2 year old hens which I have 13, a mixture of ISA browns, Red Rock, ( Black Sex Links ) Production Reds, an ISA brown, EE cross, and Plymouth Rock. My EE rooster, who is 1.
Then, there’s the Ameraucauna 11 week old , which I have 11, half are pullet, half cockerel.
Also my 6 week old Plymouth Rocks to which I have 2
Cant forget my first hatch with an incubator, to which I have 5 2 week old chicks
We live on 10 acres in the beautiful Okanagan Valley in BC 🇨🇦
This thread is going to be a place to tell my story of my chickens, all of the ups and downs.
:caf

So today,I was walking around the driveway, and looking down one of the panels in the Apricot block, I see my older chicks pecking and exploring when all of a sudden one fly’s forward rather quickly, this caught my eye, and lo and behold my chick was chasing another bird, whether it was a small hawk or a robin, even could have been a dove. My chick chased a potential predator away right through the orchard.
I wonder if this is a trait of the Ameraucauna?
Survivalist, among chickens. Let me tell you none of my other hens have ever challenged an overhead threat. These chicks also enjoy lounging under my hubbies flat deck trailer, tucking up under the axle, becoming invisible.

Tomorrows topic, Chicks grow so fast !
How does the colour in the feathers change so rapidly ?

Hello from over in Ontario! Pictures? Pictures would be lovely! We all love chicken pics! You're flock sounds lovely, and what a lovely area to raise them in! I've only been out that way once, but it was a trip I'll never remember!
My own ameraucana based EEs are the best bird chasers I have, so maybe it is in the breed! :D

Ok this is what I’m wondering.....how do the feathers change colour as a chick grows. This white pullet, has buff type of colour on her neck, 2 weeks ago her neck was just white....They grow so fast ! Also the black pullet does not look like an Ameraucauna or EE...to me am I crazy...these chicks are awesome though, here they are hanging out under the flat deck. My cute Barred rock 6 week, .....and the meeting of the minds...cockerel stare down

Yesterday was moving day for my 12 day old chicks, having outgrown the inside brooder. They had their first night out with the older chicks, and boy was I nervous putting them outside. They have their heat cave, food and water, and a secure wire dog cage to live in til they grow up a bit more. Resiliency is a great word to describe that trait which allows the

Yesterday I learned that my Ameraucauna chicks, are not pure bred, but rather Easter Eggers. But no matter, now I’m going to refer to them as EE !
Today was a great day with my flock, spent time cleaning, their coop, replace dirty bedding with some hay and chopped straw, Once I was finished I called them in, and they seemed to like it. My new chicks got a cleaning as well,
I also made a 4 compartment nesting box out of some useless cherry crates. Once I was back home and in the middle of cooking supper, my flock of EE, decided today was the day to come over to the house. We are a working cherry orchard. It has always been a right of passage when the chickens grow up enough to find me 👍

Sorry had to switch to my iPad for the pics at the house, it takes better pictures. It was so great to see them out strolling about the front yard.
They have now reached a turning point, roughly 5 weeks til they begin to lay, and I’m so looking forward to those blue eggs.
Speaking of eggs....when I first began, up until 3 days ago I thought it was all about the eggs, but now I realize I just love chickens...eggs or not. Using them for eggs now seems less important as my original flock has passed its 2 year mark.
