I have 4 production red hens that are19- 21 wks old. I got my first egg 1 week ago today. She is laying every other day since but I think I now have another one laying as I had an egg yesterday and again today. Won't know for sure until tomorrow unless my every other day has no gone to daily!
They have access to their nest boxes all day so they can lay whenever. My eggs come between noon and 2:30, not in the morning as I expected and there has not been the egg song yet!
I watched her go in and out of the box for a couple of days and could see where she had scratched the pine shavings into a bowl. I knew she was very close at that time. Two days later I found my first egg!
Mine had much larger crown and wattles before she laid than the one in the pic.
Depending on your hens age, you may have a week or more yet.
The wait seemed endless but the excitement was more than I imagined.

The amount of nesting material has nothing to do with her laying. When she gets mature enough she will lay. Mine started laying with no hay just an empty box. I bought 16 production reds Feb.22. Today i got 16 eggs.

If she is checking out the nesting box it will be soon. My Tetra Tint who is 18 weeks started laying 4 days ago, 4 eggs in a row! She started checking out the nesting box about 2-3 days before she laid an egg, she had been doing the egg squat for almost 2 weeks. I only had a gold ball in one of the boxes since my older hen was already laying and didn't go to that box. Now that the tetra tint is laying my older one has changed boxes and prefers to have something in the box. Using plastic easter eggs and she prefers the purple one!! My tetra tint has yet to do the egg song which is fine with me because my older one is so loud you can hear her a block up the street! Can't wait for the others to start laying!! Now I won"t have to hoard my eggs. haha

Yes, the amount of bedding has nothing to do with it. But we were talking about the fact that the hen's egg was cracked in a certain spot every time she laid, I suggested thicker bedding so that it wouldn't drop on the board....
