Hi everyone, we recently got 6 light Sussex chicks. We’ve never had them before, but I think they are a beautiful breed. If anyone has or used to have light Sussexes (or Sussex chickens in general) i would love to see pictures of them, as I would love to know how they will look when they are bigger. Also, are Sussex chickens docile? Does this mean you can keep a few roosters in the same coop without them fighting? Five of my six chicks are Roos 😭

I have a Speckled Sussex, but not a Light Sussex. She is quite docile and nice, but I do not have any roosters so cannot give any input there. I know some people have all-rooster flocks, and there is an article somewhere on BYC about keeping them.

I have a lovely light Sussex who's top of the pack but super docile and cuddly with me, i don't know if this is breed or regular handling from a young age, either way it's a beautifully natured bird, unfortunately it's probably a roo... Because it's such a sweetie though I'm holding out giving it up until I'm 100% sure (crowing or laying). Enjoy your babies, handle them regularly, they're a really nice bird, I wasn't originally going to get a Sussex it was kinda accidental but I'm so pleased I did and hope to get more in the future. (pics are at 3 weeks and 9 weeks old of the same bird continuing to be a cuddly cutie)

Thank you for the info! Your bird is beautiful. I’m really hoping I don’t have to get rid of my chicks even tho they are Roos they are sweethearts...

This is Horus, our first Speckled Sussex. We got her 5 days ago. She’s 9 weeks old, and spunky and very interesting. I’ve never had a chicken like her. She seems really smart. She’s curious, confident and brave. She is really interested in joining the grown up chickens. She makes these little purring sounds when she sleeps and when I pet her on my lap. She jumped on the back of Lady Bird (top, queen of the pecking order) when she was sitting on my lap. I’m not sure what that means…Is Horus going to be an alpha? I’m finding her behavior and personality VERY interesting. I think she’s either going to be a really cool, amazing chicken…or she’s going to terrorize the flock. I haven’t decided yet. I’ve never had a Sussex, I find her fascinating so far.

I have 2 speckled Sussex that are 4 weeks old, and they are pretty skittish compared to most of my other chicks, but are very docile and friendly once I pick them up. I think I just need to spend time with them more, but it’s hard to tame and handle 40 chicks. :)
I’ll try to get pictures tomorrow!
