Hi out there.
Does anyone know about Sussex chickens as far as meat production goes? I've got both the Coronation and Speckled variety breeders with eggs available near to me at this time. I like the SS color-wise the best, but purpose needs to come first. I currently raise Marans for meat/eggs and they've disappointed me on the egg front pretty severely (they're so-so in the meat department-the problem is you can't hatch chicks and eat eggs if your few hens are only laying one or two dark eggs a week each) so I'm looking to change breeds. I just don't want to fall for a pretty face again.

Thanks,
R

They are a nice sized bird, but egg wise just make sure you know the lines of the chicks. Some lines are better than others when it comes to egg and meat production.

Ah, so there's a lot of variety in the production levels. Well, thank you. The coronation sussex came from Greenfire, but I'm not sure where the speckled sussex came from. I'll go figure it out I suppose. Anyone know anything about Greenfire's current Coronation Sussex strain?
