We bought these guys as little baby chicks labeled "speckled sussex"...and now we're wondering if that's true or not?!?

Nope. This is what a young speckled sussex looks like...your bird isn't even close. Sorry!

They look like Dixie Rainbows (also called Pioneers).
I always forget about those

Well, actually the mixed breed is still a good call, folks just don't like to hear that about their hatchery birds as a rule

Agree they could be, and if they're from a hatchery that's what I'd say. I do think some of them look a little light for that, though.

I only remembered them because I had just been out feeding my Freedom Rangers yet again. I have a few with that funky multicolored barred look, and the reds with the black in the hackles.

The test is whether the OP's birds are walking Hoovers. If they aren't pouncing on anything edible then they are just barnyard mixes. I need to make sure I don't fall anywhere near the Rangers' pen. They are more like piranhas than poultry.
