Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong place (struggled to choose between here or the predators and pest section)

My chickens have become completely infested with tiny, dark coloured, pin prick size crawling insects. I have no idea what they are, whether mites or lice. They're swarming everywhere, are in the grass near the chickens, you can't go out there without getting infested yourself. They're all over us humans too!!

I've read all the info I can find on here, but have no idea where to start. Does anyone have any experience like mine? Know what the bugs likely are? It's a nightmare and my poor chickens are scratching away.

Does sound like mites. You will need to get a pyrethrin based poultry spray or dust and treat the birds and coop, and perhaps the environment. Mites can kill chickens if there are enough of them.

I just had a mite infestation, they crawl all over you and suck blood. I think that might be what you have. Pyrethrin dust was suggested to me, but I accidentally used Sevin dust first (which still worked, but isn't suggested anymore) I rubbed it under their wings and vents. It already seems to be getting better

Thank You! I'd reached the point of information overload and was completely lost.

Good to know about the Sevin dust as I read it in an older article. Will look for some . Pyrethim based dust or spray.

I'm freaking out because the poor girls are swarming with them, so hope the per shop has some.

Hi @Danii :frow Welcome To BYC

I too suggest that you use a Permethrin based poultry spray or dust. Don't forget to clean out bedding/nesting boxes and treat the coop along with the chickens. Repeat treatment in 10-14days to kill any nits or follow labeling on your product.
Here's a good list of poultry approved products: http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1151513/pesticides-approved-for-poultry
