Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I think the guesses you made on sex is right (for what that is worth) . I did not realize all of them were crested! Whoot! Like I said if you get alot of them showing up roos I will trade them out for you, but 2 out of 6 aint bad! Yeah!
I just love them! You will have to let me know when you have more. I want some lighter ones and some non creasted. If anyone is looking for chicks I got 6 very healthy and beautiful chicks from Raven1.

swedes seem to like higher meat-based protein too, so maybe the problem is in the feed, not the eggs...

several people use fermented feed and supplement with chopped liver and other meat sources. maybe that might be worth a try. it seems that even as chicks, they seem to need more of specific vitamins than others usually do, including the B vitamins, if I remember correctly (Bulldogma? hop in here and correct me if i'm wrong?)
Lots of meat protein - usually 3 times a week. I like to feed raw liver. And yes - Vitamin B is important to these guys.
Are SFH good mothers and do they go broody often?

I currently have 3 adult hens. Ginger (above) is doing an amazing job as a first-time mom. I had no fertile SFH eggs (my roo had died) and so I gave her some BCM eggs to hatch.

And then there's Elinor who is a sucky broody (she leaves the nest too often). Astrid has not yet gone broody.
Ok Leigh... et al... let's see if we can sex these Gunnar babies...
They are 6 weeks and 3 days old...
Here are the first three...

Orange...

Green...

Blue
Pullet, pullet, cockerel.

ROFL
i'm still guessing on my 8 week old chick (not gunnars). I keep going back and forth still... at 6 weeks I said roo, right now i'm leaning toward pullet.

for this little guy... (that was taken last week.)

I say Pullet.

Interestingly, one of the black ones I got from wildhorseannie (who got her original SFHs from the same place the parents of the one above likely came from) had a bigger comb than the other pullets but a smaller one than the cockerels... she's now 13 weeks and still a pullet.

So Leigh... what are you seeing here... this is not what I was guessing... What should I be looking for?

Quote: ok that's the black and white chick from jean's eggs (Gilmanor)... YAY on pullet. that means i'm up to 4...

So... anyone need any extra roos? I've got one gunnar son, nice mille fleur with dark hackles and a cute little 'pastel' I picked up this weekend, from bhep's stock (hatched by a hatchaholic friend who's wife won't allow him to keep birds LOL) still hoping it's a pullet, the comb and wattles were a LOT smaller (and pink, not red) than it's hatchmates... probably 2-3 weeks older than the one above.
