I have a 14 week pullet that has swelling around one eye. The eye is clear. There is no sneezing. No nasal discharge. No bleeding. No bubbles. She is behaving normally and eating and drinking.

I can't post a photo because my ancient computer isn't cooperating

She is my flightiest bird. She is picked on the most by one particular hen and has a tendenancy to panic and fly into things.

What could she have? How do I treat her? Does she need antibiotics?

Thanks,
Derby

Be VERY careful about the antibiotics you use. DO NOT use the triple antibiotic or any that has a "caine" in the ingredients. These may kill you bird.

Bite the bullet and go get some terrymycin (spl) anti that you can put in the eye. This is usually for dogs and cats, but works very well in the other animals.

The feed store has terramycin to put in food or to put in water. Can I put the water soluble terramycin directly on the eye? Or does it actually have to go into the waterer? I have had a very healthy flock until this. And she has not other symptoms. I can separate her and give her her own waterer.

Thanks so much,
Derby

I have bacitracin eye ointment that I used on my dd. Think I can use that?

The eyeball itslef is clear and fine. The swelling is more in the "eyebrow" area and then the area right under the eye.

Thanks,
Derby

You can use any eye ointment as long as it does not contain any benzocaine or other "caines" as this WILL harm your bird.

There has been reports that these can kill your birds.

You most ikley can not use the water soluable terramycin on the eye.

Good Luck !

Could be a sinus infection. Has his nose been clear? I have had a few hens have similar problems in the past & cleared it up with a week of tylan at 1/2cc per 1x/day injection.
