Swelling around the lower jaw in my Leghorn

I love and am so amazed by nature, really, that something so scary looking can respond so fast to natural remedies. How wonderful. Everything should be considered and I think this is a lesson on starting with the basics first then working your way up to the bigger meds if needed. I think so many people are quick to get out the "big guns" for remedies. I don't discount a complete approach when needed, but the "keep it simple approach" certainly worked here. Love it.

Thank you ...

I've already contacted Fage and White House, in the hopes of gettin' bacteria/culture counts for L. Bulgaricus, S. Thermophilus, L. Acidophilus, Bifidus, L. Casei and (possibly) Acetobacter. Also hopin' White House can lemme know if A. aceti, A. pasteurianus, A. pasteurianus or A. liquefaciens might be in the mix.

Or, it could just be the blueberries ~'-)

I was really hesitant about antibiotics because we have been careful about non medicated feed and free ranging and so forth... but I didn't want to lose Josie. Not that we are totally home free but she does look so much better I am surely encouraged! Since I couldn't find antibiotics I felt like I needed to do everything to support her immune wise.... imagine my surprise to find her so much better 24 hrs later!

I have found lots of interesting information during this process though so everything is a learning process!!

I'm sure God coulda done it all on His own, but I'm bettin' your 'recipe' had a lot to do w/ it.

Just in case White House gets spooked by my Q's, hopin' you'd closely inspect your ACV's labeling when you get the chance ... wantin' to know if it's been pasteurized. Also, now that I'm thinkin' about it, how long it's been open, how much of the bottle is gone, and where you store it.

I'm sure that sound kinda nuts, but I'm workin' on somethin' and I don't wanna leave anything out ~'-)

Ok Correction... I usually buy canning/pickling ACV but this is just plain old ACV... says 5% acidity on the label.... there is of course the chance that this is the pickling kind poured into this smaller bottle that I snagged from the bathroom the other day when I was looking for the first bottle I could find to begin ASAP getting it into the flock.

I see nothing on the label about pasteurization ... so I can't answer that question.

Just another tidbit about vinegar... if you get a jellyfish sting, sun poison etc cool compresses of AVC work wonders!

For most purposes, it's the acidity of vinegar and/or the tannin ACV contains, that deserves the credit. But, I'm still thinkin' that some (or possibly all) species of the bacteria Acetobacter could be found to synergistically work with others (such as the cultures found w/in the yogurt).

In your case, and at the minimum, the ACV reduced the viscosity of the mucus, thereby allowing more direct contact w/ anything else that Josie put in her mouth, including the cultures, and the vitamins, and all the other good stuff that can be found in blueberries, and on their skins (which ironically includes the A. aceti that makes the vinegar in the first place ~'-)

Is it OK w/ you for me to make use of all this thread contains in other publications? I think it'd serve well for me to make the case for more in-depth clinical study, but by folks far more capable than I.

jlblock: I'm so glad for this outcome and this thread got some noteworthy information passed here. Beautiful before and after pictures for people to see and compare. and Most of all Josie still chooking around for your son!

God is good for sure.
