I removed my first bumble on Sunday. I read the forums and got the plug out and wrapped it up and treated with betadine. We have been doing a daily soak of Epsom salt water and then betadine and re wrapping with gauze and vet wrap. There is still some swelling now 5 days later? The wound has completely closed up My mom was thinking maybe I need to make a new clean cut because all the infection didn't get out or there is new infection. Last night there was a small hole with oozing which we soaked and then let air dry so to drain (no wrap). I'm feeling super frustrated becuase I did the surgery and removed the hard kernel and there was a lot of blood but we thought the wound would heal up nicely like the online tutorials. Anyone had to reopen and retreat ? What am I doing wrong?

Sorry I posted this in the new memeber introductions. I thought I was posting in the illness forum. I'm new to the site but thought I'd join to try and get some help wth my chicken

I would think a course of antibiotics would be necessary but I'm not sure which would be best.. Reopening may not be necessary.
Re-post in Injuries and someone will be able to help you! :)

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

There is going to be swelling for a few weeks. Each day after surgery, you need to unwrap the wound and check to see what is going on. If the hole is a bit red like a scab, you got all the infection out. If it is starting to turn yellow, you will need to go back in. I like to pack the hole with neosporin (without the pain killer) and don't put the tip into the hole or you have contaminated the entire tube, I then put a tiny piece of gauze over the hole and then wrap the foot up with vet wrap. Starting up on the leg, down around the pad, between the webbing and back up the leg. Not too tight, but tight enough to stay on. I squeeze the vet wrap on the foot as it is sticky. If the foot is still warm 5 mins later, it is wrapped properly. If the foot is cold, the wrap is too tight.

After one week of checking the hole and applying neosporin and rewrappying, and you don't see any infection, you can go down to checking ever other day or every 3 days. However you MUST keep this foot wrapped for one month, it must be kept dry at all times, even if you have to keep the bird in the coop. Any wetness is going to reinfect this hole. When the scab falls off on it's own, you can remove the wrap. Do not pick at it or try to pull it off prematurely. The skin must be completely healed over by itself so all the crud the bird is going to step in is not going to turn into another staff infection.

Good luck and I hope you can get her all healed soon! :-)

Thank you! I was worried. This makes me feel better. I didn't realize it would take so long.
