Swimming Silkie ?!?

Well today was interesting on the wet chicken front! My 3 day old Australorp chick ninja'd (AGAIN) out of her enclosure and joined my cousin for a run in the sprinkler. absolutely HILARIOUS to see a tiny black fluff ball run through the water like a kid. I suggest you try it

Careful with the silkies swimmers. A neighbor's silkie drowned in a water trough, one of those circular low ones. She thinks that it's head feathers got too heavy and it couldn't get out.

That is just the cutest thing ever!! Can you mix silkies with other types of chickens? Or do they get picked on since they are small? I am preparing for a small flock and want to do it just right!!

Surely can. If you breed a Frizzle with a Silkie you get Sizzles. Cutest things out but I myself prefer my purebred Silkies. You can also get Silkies that are the same size as regular chickens, its only the Bantam Silkie thats pretty small.

Depends ... silkies can have an open skull which can be subject to pecking. Silkies are (by definitian) bantam (small) chickens. Chickens can be size sensattive - and color selective. Birds of a feather really do flock together

My silkie rooster and my big Barnyard roo both love the rain...you will see them outside drenched acting like nothing is going on while all the hens are huddled in the coop to avoid the rain...Lol. I don't dry them off and they end up dry in no time anyway...this is during winter and it has caused no illl effects.

I'm pretty sure that Silkies are only bantams...there are no LF silkies...pretty sure...

My silkies also love the rain, they will not stay out! Nori got sick because she was out in the rain and then it got cold. But they LOVE their baths, as soon as I put the water on them their wings drop and they start to fall asleep

I have a time trying to keep their heads out of the water! I don't fill my sink anymore for that reason, just use the sink hose.
