swiss mountain dog ???

This is my appenzeler the medium Swissy but unfortunetly she has turned into a large problem with my birds and goat. Over the past year she has killed at least 20 of my birds and almost killed my goat a couple of times. She really cant be trusted. Herding dogs my butt. Hunters maybe.

That's too bad. Our neighbors got 2 BMDs (for the "look") at the same time we did, but from a different place. Their dogs are horribly un-thrifty. All our dogs are just under 2 y.o. and whereas ours is a beautiful, healthy dog, one of theirs is already going in for hip surgery and the other has joint problems just waiting to happen.

My old wolf hybrid had bad hips/joints and had to have multiple surgeries. Just one of her surgeries cost over $5000 and she had 3 surgeries total. I learned then that it is better to wait and find a healthy dog than get one with a questionable lineage. That doesn't apply to rescue dogs, but if you are paying money for an animal make sure you know what you are getting. We could have bought 7 BMDs with the money I spent on surgeries for that one dog. Fortunately... she was worth every dime and I had nothing better to spend my money on at the time.

We had what was probably a mountain dog and maybe not even a cross except his coat seemed a bit thicker. We found him in a shelter being claimed as a rott cross when he definitely didn't look or act like it as he grew up. Finally after much wondering and guessing over his breed someone showed pictures of mountain dogs and it matched perfectly. The size, shape, ears, tail, color including the white down the front, and even personality. He was wonderful with all the animals. If he found baby kittens or rabbits he'd carry them to us without any harm except some slobber. He did start out chasing the horses as a puppy until my ornery mare decided she wouldn't stand for it and he quickly gave that up. Little guinea pig pups would follow him around the yard when we let them eat grass. My sister would clean her dwarf hamster cages and leave the hamsters in an open top container while she walked off to wash the bottom of the cage. We'd find the dog laying near the container guarding them from the cat. There wasn't any animal he wasn't good with and I used him as my 4-h dog project and took him to obedience and agility classes. The only annoying thing was he hated to be alone. We'd have to lock him in a stall when we rode the horses off property or he'd insist on following. He couldn't be in a different room from you or he'd whine and scratch at the door. He got rather annoying sometimes. We finally had him put down last year at 9years old after 2 cancer surgeries and some joint problems.
