Switching Feed Types

Back when I could get local grains, I noticed my chickens would eat the oat groats, but as soon a summer hit they would not touch the oats. I think what they were getting free range gave them what the oats had given over the winter. If they free range you could let them pick and choose because that varied diet changes what they need.

I had free ranged for a few months then we had a red tailed hawk take one of the welsummers. So I’ve been keeping them locked or out when I’m available. But yes while I had them free ranging they were not being picky. While in the coop/run they are being super picky.
