Hello! I recently found that my chickens have LICE! Totally disgusting but I am taking care of it. I was applying Elector PSP to my chickens last night and I found that one of my chickens has a very bloated/swollen abdomen all the way down and around her vent. I have no idea what this could be. It like it was filled with air or fluid or something almost. Also, I found that on her very bottom she had a slight bald spot (however I saw this on 3 chickens). I believe this to because of the lice. Does anyone have any ideas as what this could be? Do I need to be worried? I can seclude her too if necessary. Also, I have noticed that she has some splotchy purple on her comb. Sometimes it is just bright red and other times the purple shows more. Does this mean anything either? It isn't frostbite or anything btw. Thank you!

Can you post any pictures? A swollen lower belly can be due to ascites (water belly) or internally laid egg matter, egg yolk peritonitis, cancer, or a hernia. Ascites is from liver disease by any of the other problems listed, and sometimes from heart failure. If her comb is only getting blue near the back, that could be normal, but if it is all over, then heart problems may be possible, or labored breathing from ascites. Ascites fluid is yellow or amber, and some people or a vet can drain some of the fluid to help relieve symptoms and to confirm ascites. An 18 gauge needle with or without a syringe works well. It is not without risk! Lice can be treated with permethrin spray or dust used at least twice 10 days apart.

Thank you for the response!! Okay, ive got a lot of reading to do 😂. The black/purple stuff is mostly just around where her beak meets the comb. Are there any other ways to determine ascites? Or any way to treat it without a vet or me putting a needle in her? Thank you for the help?
